Hi, my name is Yilin, and Toshi was one of my bestest and longest friends. He was our protector. I’m starting this fundraiser for his mum, Kay - who has been through more heartbreak than anyone should ever have to endure. Three years ago, she lost her eldest son, Toshi, my best friend. Just seven weeks ago, her world was shattered all over again when her younger son, Kazuo, tragically took his own life.

She has always been someone who gives her heart to others. As a palliative care nurse specialist, she has spent her life caring for people and their families during the hardest moments. But after losing both of her sons, she simply cannot return to such emotionally demanding work right now. When Toshi passed away, she used up all of her paid leave to grieve. This time, she has no leave left, which means she is now on unpaid time off with no certainty of when she’ll be ready to work again.

On top of her grief, she is carrying a heavy financial load. There are funeral expenses to cover, and she also wishes to remain in the rental home she shared with Kazuo. His room is still filled with his belongings and his scent, and being there brings her a small sense of comfort in the middle of unimaginable pain. But without Kazuo’s financial contribution, the rent is now far too much for her to manage alone. As a single mother, with no financial support from the father, she is left to shoulder everything on her own.

This fundraiser is to help ease some of that burden, to cover funeral costs and give her some financial breathing space while she takes the time she desperately needs to grieve and heal.
