WHAT IS THE BALI ART PROJECT ?

The Bali Art Project  is a nonprofit 501(c)3 created in 2000 by Gaylon Duke and Zenia Victor, both Santa Fe Living Treasures, experienced teachers and world travellers, who felt concerned to see a diminishing number of young Americans travelling overseas.

As they travelled, they contined asking themselves: How can we help young people be enriched and expanded by the lives and cultures of people in other parts of the world?

And, so, the Bali Art Project  was born.

For the past 18 years, the Bali Art Project  has supported young Americans, with limited financial means, to learn about the world outside the boundaries of their own country. And, in doing so, to learn about themselves.

Through the Bali Art Project , a group of Santa Fe high school juniors spend 4 weeks in Bali, mostly in Ubud, the cultural center, studying various local art forms with master Balinese teachers. They learn dance, gamelan, painting, and shadow puppet making in the artists' home studios, where we meaningfully participate in Balinese daily life, and get to see the role of the arts in Balinese cultural and spiritual life.

The young people also take day trips to sacred sites, spend three days in a homestay in a remote village, and end the trip with three days on a serene beach where they can snorkel and reflect on what they have learned. They also study the language and attend temple ceremonies and performances.

WHY THIS JOURNEY IS SO IMPORTANT:

We believe that there has never been a more important time to support young people to travel in the world, especially to places deeply foreign to them.

Travel has grown our compassion and empathy for people who live differently from us. It's given us confidence and courage to navigate and adapt to the unknown. It has helped us discover who we are. It's taught us how to appreciate our families and lives.

These are the values the journey in Bali sows in these youth. It is a rite of passage. It changes them, their families and our community.

WHY WE ARE GOING:
We, the eight high school juniors, can't believe how lucky we are to have been selected to go on this trip to Bali! For us, we are going to this island with a hope to return with new eyes and inner colors: to begin to make our impact on this world. We saw last year's group who went and came back changed. They're amazing... we want what they have.
We're going so we can come back more confident.
We're going so we can become more connected to who we are.
And we're going so we can learn from other people and other cultures in the world.

We know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we will give it everything we have!

HOW YOU CAN HELP US:

We welcome your generosity and contributions in any amount you wish to offer.
Here's what we are raising:

1. FINANCIAL
$ 15,250 Total International Roundtrip Airfare
$ 5,600 Accommodation, Homestay & Excursions
$ 2,000 Bali Teachers' payments for arts classes
$ 1,650 All meals
$ 3,500 Miscellaneous, including travel insurance

We are seeking to raise $15,000 of the total $28,000 we need, and will continue fundraising for the remaining portion through our annual Art Show, sponsorships, and direct appeals.

*All donors will receive daily blog updates, so you can follow the incredible journey of these young people. You will also receive a personal letter from this summer's youth. Please be sure to email us your mailing address!

*All donors over $250 will receive a customized photo book autographed by the group, with a gratitude listing of all donors on the back.

2. FREQUENT FLYER MILES
As the cost of airfare is the single largest expense, frequent flyer miles are a tremendous contribution!

Southwest Airlines and United Airlines are our usual carriers; we will accept all airlines miles.

3. JOIN OUR FAMILY & SHARE OUR MESSAGE!
We deeply value the family that has formed over the past 18 years of the Bali Art Project . We welcome you to join it!

Please help us keep this program going, by sharing this page with your friends, family and community. It takes a village...

If you would like to receive our Bali Art blog updates this summer, or are interested in learning more. Please contact us at: [email redacted]

TIMEFRAME:
Our goal is to raise $7,500 by April 30, and to raise the total $15,000 by May 30.

THE BALI ART PROJECT: A LITTLE BIT MORE ...
~~~~~
"Good morning! Today we met the sun as we walked through the rice paddies for the last time here in Ubud. We were greeted by the ducks and farmers ... Our time here has been amazing. We’ve gotten the opportunity to experience life changing and mind blowing things which we will all hold near and dear to our hearts forever."
WHY BALI?
For us, there simply is no place like Bali.
We chose Bali for the deep spirituality and art that lives in every aspect of the culture.
We chose Bali because it's about as different a place and culture as we could find from Santa Fe. And we so much wanted the young people to experience a place, a people, a culture, and a natural environment that was magically and powerfully different.
And, lastly you could say, we chose Bali because Bali chose us. After reflecting on all the countries we'd been to, we'd never felt anywhere what we'd felt from the Balinese: a genuine open-heartedness to share their culture and their friendship and their lives.
"The incredible and unique thing about being in Bali is it’s ability to make you feel like you are a million miles from “home” but also feel like it has been home all along."
"Looking out into the sea reminded me of how beautiful this place is and made me realize that it’s going to be difficult to say goodbye. We’re going to leave soon so these last few days will certainly be cherished! We’ve all fallen in love with Bali and as we approach the end of our trip we see that it’s become a permanent part of us."
