Most of you know that I'm working for a non-profit organization in Phuket, Thailand. The organization is called “Phuket Has Been Good to Us.” The Foundation was founded as a direct result of the 2004 Asian Tsunami. PHBGTU foundation currently employs 6 teachers and a small office team of big hearted souls that fundraise and network on behalf of under privileged children living in Thailand.
The teaching team of 6 teachers, works across 3 schools. I work in two of them. Between the two schools I teach 358 students per week!
The second school that I work at is considered a “King’s School.” The original school was demolished by the 2004 Tsunami and a new school was built with funding from the Kings Foundation. In addition to rebuilding classrooms, they built barrack style dormitories for students who NEEDED a home because they no longer had a home and/or family to live with.
Currently out of 700 students at this school, 150 of them live at the school. They range from the ages of 6 to18 years-old. The students live at the school for many reasons.
1. Some of the student’s families were affected so desperately by the tsunami that they could not afford another body to take care of at home
2. Some students don’t have families here anymore because of the Tsunami or other social issues such as drugs, prison and prostitution
3. For many of the students we do not know “their story.” But what we do know is that they were dropped at the doors of the school in hope they could have a better life here than wherever they were before. That says a lot about their situation, if soemone thought living in a school barracks was a better life.
There are many beautiful parts of Thailand, but these children’s stories is not one of them.
These children are left with us and we are willing and ready to help but we need some financial help to continue our work.

My foundation does a Sponsor a Child program; and it reaches out to the socially orphaned students that live at the school.
I have this crazy idea to raise enough money to sponsor 5 of my socially-orphaned students. I know I can do this because I have some amazingly crazy, generous, beautiful souled friends, family, acquaintances. That's you!
I’m ending this fundraiser on a national holiday, October 13th, the day of my birth. (that date better have already been penciled into your calendar!) All of you that were planning on sending me lavished gifts for my birthday - I have another thing in mind. Puhhhh-leeeeeze donate to my Asian beauties. After being here 11 months I’m certain they need it more than my shoe collecting does.
I know times are rough for some of us. But compare your rough day to one of my orphaned students who lives in a school, day in and day out. They are woken up at 5 am to clean “their house”, the food they’re fed barley looks edible by our standards and worst of all these children don’t receive the unconditional love from family that is so routine for us. They don’t get hugs and kisses every morning that our parents give us when they drop us off at school. They don’t get taken care of when they have a cold. And they don’t get told how special each and every one of them really is.
The ONLY advantage they have up on you is that they have a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L, intelligent, and quick-witted English teacher. But aside from that advantage, they really need some help.
MY GOAL:
Raise enough money to sponsor 5 students that currently reside at the school. To sponsor a child is 10,000 Thai Baht, 50,000THB for 5 children. This is equivalent of $1569.60 USD to sponsor all 5 children. This is hardly any money at all to some of us. Every little bit counts and every cent will be going towards bettering these children’s lives and strengthening their English Education.
Once you click here to meet the babes, you’ll notice that I chose 4 girls and 1 boy to be sponsored. Let me explain the reason I choose to sponsor a female over a male in Thailand..
Statistically 1 in every 8 girls finds themselves in the sex trade industry by the age of 16. If I do the math correctly 4 girls out of each of my classes will have sold her body while still attending the school I walk into everyday. These girls will be using their bodies, instead of their brains, to make money. If these girls had better English speaking skills, they could easily find a job in Phuket’s booming tourism industry; they wouldn’t feel that their only option to make money is to use their body. They’ll know they have skills to find a respectable job. My biggest hope is that they’ll use what we taught them to keep them out of the sex industry.
Before coming here I didn’t see one of the bigger reasons to teach English in Thailand, but now I see a good education is even more important than I could have imagined.

Like I said a goal is a minimum of five students. If you beautiful people exceed my expectations I’ll update new students to be sponsored promptly.
I am so grateful that I found this non-profit foundation. But I am even more privileged that I was chosen to be one of their few English Teachers they have. Being so far from home makes my heart ache sometimes. I miss you guys. I miss the familiarity of my home country. I miss speaking fluent sarcasm. I miss decent cheese burgers. But even though my heart misses home so much, I am happy to be here and be a part of this foundation. The people who are a part of the Phuket Has Been Good To Us foundation have become family to me and the kids that I get to interact with everyday teach me more than I teach them. I am sure of that.
I don’t advocate for many things, but I’m a believer for this foundation. I believe it’s doing so much good for children who truly need good in their lives.
The Thai word for kiss is pronounced “joob.” In my classroom we use this word often. We “joob” our brains when we do something smart, we “joob” each other to show we care, and it’s not mandatory, but Teacher Alicia graciously accepts “joobs” at the departure of each class.
