WOYM began when public  health professional and racial justice advocate, Theresa Alphonse,  noticed a lack of conversation in communities of color about mental health. She went into her communities with a sign that read, "What's On Your Mind...Talk To Me." This form of  active listening made her realize that her idea was really an intervention and had the potential to combat stigma and connect people to resources.

WOYM is breaking down mental health stigmas by providing resources, programming, outreach in the form of active listening  and workshops that educate and illuminate misconceptions about mental illness. Statistics show that communities of color receive less mental health care and have more barriers to accessing that care. Yet people of color are more likely to live with a mental illness. 57% of Black and African American young adults 18-25 and 50.1 percent of adults 26-49 with serious mental illness did NOT receive treatment.

The purpose of the van would be to:

1. Providing a safe space for people of color to share thoughts, emotions and feelings
 Feeling heard, validated and affirmed

2. Increase Access to Mental Health Services·
Connect people to long term therapy and therapeutic supports curbside.
Building trust within communities that have been historically harmed.

3. Improve Mental Health Outcomes
Alleviate mental health disparities in vulnerable populations
Enabling self-efficacy.
Addressing social determinants of health.
Reduce barriers to healthcare

We believe in the importance of our work. We hope you do too. We understand that Covid has exacerbated mental health issues and we want to be ready to respond.

Whether you make a one time donation or seek a long term partnership, all funding goes towards expanding and bolstering WOYM's programs and getting this van!
