<div>He is proud to have lived and worked in the Bay Area, where he once operated a physical studio in San Francisco. He became widely known for capturing powerful images of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, preserving one of the city’s most pivotal moments through his lens.

<div>For most of his career, his website drew extraordinary attention, averaging nearly 100,000 views per day at its peak. Today, that traffic has dwindled to roughly 50 views per month, and sales often total less than one hundred dollars a month. The shift from traditional media to digital platforms dramatically altered the landscape for independent photographers, and the impact has been profound.

<div><strong>Despite the scale and cultural importance of his archive, his income has steadily decreased. At 72 years old, he is now facing the possibility of seeking outside employment simply to meet basic living expenses.</strong>

<div>Beyond his accomplishments, Wernher is an empathetic, deeply thoughtful, and genuinely good human being. He approaches life with humility and wonder. Over time, he has become someone I lovingly call my adopted grandpa, a mentor and friend whose wisdom and kindness extend far beyond photography.

<div>By complete accident, I met someone who has changed my life. What started as a wrong number turned into a friendship with Wernher Krutein, a brilliant photographer, historian, and human I now lovingly call my adopted grandpa.

<div>Wernher does not have a living spouse, children, or close family to fall back on. Over time, he has become like family to me. That reality makes his financial uncertainty feel even heavier, because if he falls, there is no safety net waiting beneath him.
