Support Walter in the Cancer Fight

As many of you already know, Walter has been battling an aggressive and rare cancer for close to two years. He now needs to have a test done that will potentially save his life, which is only available in the States for US $6,000. Unfortunately, the BC and Canadian health care system does not cover any of this cost, or many other costs that we have encountered through the required treatments and procedures to date. We are asking for help from our family and friends to support us in his fight.

This is how it all came about, and why we desperately need financial support...
In the fall of 2016, Walter at 72 years old, was concerned about pain in his chest that would not go away. It was only getting worse. An ultrasound was done and multiple lesions were found in his liver. This is when the BC Cancer Agency got involved. He then went to have a CT scan and found further lesions which lead to an MRI and bone scan, followed by a chest scan.
In December 2016 he went to Vancouver for a PET/CT scan, and in January 2017 a biopsy of his liver in Dawson Creek. He was then diagnosed with metastatic Thymic carcinoma to the liver and bone. The Thymus gland, known as Thymic Cancer. The medical oncologist explained that he had stage 4 metastatic cancer. This type of cancer is very rare.
Chemotherapy started in April with 6 cycles of carboplatin and etoposide, this is when he lost his hair and also his energy.
After treatment, another CT scan showed no change in size of the lesions, only that there were more.
With consultation, the medical oncologist recommended a different type of chemotherapy treatment, which included 8 cycles of second-line single-agent pemetrexed. Another CT scan after this showed that the lesions had only increased in size.
The doctors then realized that they don't know where the cancer is coming from....
The medical oncologist then requested a trip to Prince George to perform another liver biopsy and a Nuclear medicine Octreotide scan. The scan results were not successful, so the medical oncologist would like to send the results to the USA Foundation One genomic testing facility at a cost of US $6,000. This type of testing is not done in Canada. Although he has extended health benefits through Blue Cross, they do not financially support out of province testing. In the mean time, they will give him third-line chemotherapy with single-agent Taxol because they are unsure how to treat this type of cancer, until they are able to do the Foundation One Testing.
