Support Victims of Mogadishu Attack

Donation protected
As you may know, there was a massive terrorist attack on Saturday, 14th of October 2017 that occurred in Somalia’s capital city, Mogadishu. This was the deadliest terrorist attack the country has ever witnessed since Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group that is trying to topple the government, started armed confrontation against anyone that opposes their ideology. In this tragedy, more than 350 people have lost their lives and at least 400 others have suffered severe life-threatening injuries. With the current situation that the country is facing, the Somali government is not in a position to provide full support to the victims and their loved ones. Therefore, the few hospitals in the city which were already operating at their full capacity are trying their best to provide the medical needs of the injured ones.

We are a group of concerned students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, who is touched by this horrific incident that happened in a city that was already struggling with many other challenges as a result of sociopolitical and economic factors. We, therefore, decided to raise funds for the victims that were most affected by the attack. To include all other willing hearts at our reach, we decided to launch this GoFundMe page support those who were fortunate to survive and the families that have lost their loved ones in this senseless mass killing. We are committed to making sure that every penny of your donations reaches to restore hope in these devastated families. No donation is too small to give in support of these families. So please donate! Donate to show that we care and feel the pain with them!

This fund will enable the surviving victims to easily access proper medical treatment and cover other related expenses. We will be updating you about this campaign and its outcome. We will as well share pictures and videos of the beneficiaries of this amazing cause.  We are aiming to collect this fund in the next two weeks but we will try to be flexible in case we don’t reach our target of $10,000 within this period.

Who are we and where we are from?

We are Somali-Canadian students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada and we’ve organized this fundraising page for the victims of Mogadishu terror attack on Saturday, October 14th 2017. In addition, we are also collaborating with student clubs at our campus such as the World University Service of Canada’s local branch at UBC (WUSC-UBC) and African Awareness Initiative (AAI) to raise awareness on issues such as conflict resolution, peace building, mitigating terrorism, and media coverage that matter to Somalia today. Details of this awareness event can be found here.

Our relationship or connection to the parties we are raising funds for?

We are touched by the scale of loss in this heinous terrorist attack that happened in the country’s capital, Mogadishu. As students from Somalia, we felt obliged to help our community (Our brothers and sisters) back home in the wake of this devastating event due to the fact that there are limited institutions that provide support to the people affected.

How the funds will be spent?

We will ensure that any proceeds we collect on this platform shall be used to support the surviving victims and the bereaved families of those who lost their lives. The funds will be used to pay part of their medical and burial expense and any other basic necessity these victims are assessed to be in need of.

We are committed to making sure that the money will reach the beneficiaries under the guidance of a trusted Somali found charity organization that is registered in the United State of America. The organization, Humanitarian Africa Relief organization (HARO), is dedicated to providing humanitarian relief and development throughout horn of Africa and has an office in Mogadishu. We will be working with HARO and our student representative on ground to ensure that this donation fulfils its true purpose of supporting the victims.

Our withdrawal plan to get the funds from the campaign to the ultimate beneficiary/ies?

With the help of HARO, we will be using wire transfer companies like Western Union and remittance companies like Dahabshiil bank, Tawakal, Amal, any other company that's available at the site for transfer of the funds to help the beneficiaries. Our representative, Sharmarke Abdirahman Ali, who is onsite is helping us do a need-based assessment to determine a list of potential beneficiaries.

If you like to know more about this incident, please leave a comment and we will be more than happy to respond as soon as possible.

Please donate to help humanity thrive in the hearts of these victims!

Thank you all for your support, may God bless you.
