<div>My name is Verónica Hernández. I am 44 years old and have lived in Novato, California, for 12 years. I have worked at Bolinas Market for 6 years—a community I deeply appreciate for its hospitality and unity. I love my community and my children, whom God has blessed me with and who are my greatest treasure.

<div>Not long ago, my life took an unexpected turn. First, along with my brave neighbors, I faced an eviction at Romar Ct, where my neighbors and I were <a href="https://www.marinij.com/2025/04/28/novato-tenants-displaced-after-city-red-tags-building/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forced to leave due to our negligent landlord</a> . My family had lived there for years, but we were only given 5 days to pack up and start searching for a place to live. Because of the urgency, my expenses skyrocketed, and I had to separate my family into two apartments so we would get accepted.

<div>A few months later, I received another hard blow: I was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. This has been devastating, both emotionally and financially.

<div>Despite everything, in recent weeks I stood firm as the leader of the Romar Ct Tenants Group, fighting until the very last moment—before starting treatment—to ensure that all displaced families have a dignified home. But now I must face an even more personal battle: my health.
</div>

<div>My doctors have recommended that I begin chemotherapy urgently, which means I will no longer be able to work. My partner has had to miss several days of work to care for me, which has greatly reduced our income. Meanwhile, expenses continue to increase due to the eviction and medical costs. We are seeking help from every organization and program we can find, but our need is immediate: we fear not being able to cover rent for September and October.

<div>That is why I am humbly asking for your support. I am seeking to raise $30,000, which will go toward:

<div>Hace poco, mi vida dio un giro inesperado. Primero, junto a mis valientes vecinos enfrentamos un desalojo en Romar Ct, donde varias familias fueron <a href="https://www.marinij.com/2025/04/28/novato-tenants-displaced-after-city-red-tags-building/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obligadas a salir por la negligencia del dueño</a> . Mi familia había vivido allí durante años, pero solo nos dieron 5 días para empacar y comenzar a buscar dónde vivir. Por la urgencia, mis gastos se dispararon y tuve que dividir a mi familia en dos apartamentos para que nos aceptaran.

<div>Pocos meses después recibí otra dura noticia: fui diagnosticada con cáncer en etapa 2. Ha sido un golpe devastador, tanto emocional como económicamente.

<div>A pesar de todo, en las últimas semanas me mantuve firme como líder del Grupo de Inquilinos Afectados en Romar Ct, luchando hasta el último momento, antes de iniciar mi tratamiento, para que todas las familias desplazadas tengan un techo digno. Pero ahora me toca afrontar una batalla aún más personal: mi salud.

<div>Mis médicos me han indicado comenzar quimioterapia de manera urgente, lo que me impedirá seguir trabajando. Mi pareja ha tenido que ausentarse varios días de su empleo para cuidarme, lo que ha reducido mucho nuestros ingresos. Mientras tanto, los gastos siguen aumentando por el desalojo y los costos médicos. Estamos buscando toda la ayuda posible en organizaciones y programas, pero nuestra necesidad es inmediata: tememos no poder cubrir la renta de septiembre y octubre.
