Support Unique Mental Health Model

Tax deductible
Only open for three years, California Clubhouse is a thriving haven for San Mateo County residents with mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, depression or anxiety.  We’re at capacity.  We need support to be stable and sustain our growth. It would be excruciating to turn people away.

Participants, called members, are going back to work and back to school. They are building confidence, skills and relationships.  It is part of a global movement, one of the most transformative models of recovery in the world. It’s unique:

·        A built-in community of friends and co-workers.

·        A place to be engaged and learn new skills.

·        A place to get support, from learning to cope to getting a job.

·        There is no cost to join. Membership is for life.

California Clubhouse is growing surprisingly fast.  To date, we’ve served 243 members and, last month 21 new members joined, plus we helped 5 more members return to paid employment.

“I was so excited that the Clubhouse opened. I needed the structure,” says Agnes, a member who spent her days at home  and now comes regularly and helps with accounting tasks. “I enjoy it so much that I have decided to go back to school to get my certificate in bookkeeping.”

A big part of changing people’s lives is continued training for both members and staff, working side by side.

For example, in October, we’ll be sending a group to the 2018 USA Clubhouse Conference in Washington DC. Attending both the National and International conferences is where members learn best practices and connect with other Clubhouses around the globe. Longtime member Amaal will never forget the year he was able to attend. “It was the first time I had traveled since my recovery and I was going all the way to the other side of the country to Washington D.C.”

Theresa, a member, attended last year and found rich resources. “My favorite breakout session was about technology. Ideas ranged from using YouTube videos for wellness (for instance, we have pulled up yoga videos to follow along with), to creating podcasts/videos (the young adult program puts out periodic video updates now).”

Creating these kinds of opportunities stretches the budget. Sending five members and staff to this year’s conference costs close to $7,500. But the benefit of seeing people who thought they’d never travel to collaborate with peers at a conference is striking.

We need your help to make this, and other training opportunities happen. If you are one of the one in four Americans who has suffered from a mental illness this year or if you love someone who is struggling, help us keep California Clubhouse a relevant and profound resource.  Give to our continuing education fund.

Every donation helps us make life better for people with major mental illness and their families. Every dollar ensures that our programs, which help people stay out of the hospital and on the path to productivity, will continue, evolve and flourish.  Every donation helps.       https://californiaclubhouse.org/
