Support Tonka's Recovery

Tonka is known by many as the gentle giant and majestic man of the herd of Equine Adventures. Standing 17h with a jet black coat, this Percheron is regal, but he has the personality of a teddy bear. Guests return to ride each year and request him as their steed. Locals love seeing him on advertising for Hatteras Island and some have even been lucky enough to ride him as well. It’s not hard to fall in love with him after a quick interaction. 
Tonka joined Equine Adventures when he was only 4 years old back in 2005. He is now 19 years old and just this September was diagnosed with penile cancer after discovering cauliflower lesions on his penis with a prognosis of a few months. After gathering as much information as possible the family made the tough decision to attempt to give him the best life possible and take him to NC State to undergo penile amputation. This decision would hopefully give him the opportunity for a normal lifespan. Removing the penis would remove the cancer, but it would be an extremely tough recovery. Unfortunately, no one knew how tough.
Tonka underwent penile amputation surgery on October 15, 2020. The surgery was successful, however, Tonka did not react well and struggled with recovery, was disoriented, delusional and then coliced (gastrointestinal reaction). He had to be taken in for a 2nd emergency surgery on Friday, October 16th. The outcome was poor and the family disheartened. 
Tonka made it through the 2nd surgery and is now in recovery at NC State with the best care from some great surgeons and staff, but he has a long way to go. Recovery will be challenging for both him and the family. 
Although the family is reluctant to ask for support, the doctor bills are now totaling over $15,000 and are expected to total approximately $18,000. Therefore, any support from the community or past guests that Tonka has touched in some way or another, would be greatly appreciated.
