Our friend Tom Stubby had a bicycle accident on Thursday, August 30.  Tom was cycling on the Keystone Trail near the L Street underpass at 65th Street, came around a blind curve and hit a large branch.  We estimate he was traveling at roughly 25 mph and was thrown 20 feet.  The accident resulted in a broken collar bone, nine broken ribs, and a fractured hip.  Tom was in ICU for five days then moved to a regular floor for eight days.  He has since gone home to recuperate as he was denied acute inpatient rehab.  His injuries were all on his left side. He needs to remain relatively immobile for 12 weeks to enable the bones to heal.  Due to this accident, which authorities believe may have been caused by kids intentionally setting obstacles on the bike path, Tom is not expected to get back to work until after the first of the year.  In addition, he is unable to be home alone so Julie is also off work.  This family has been through so much and have so far to go to get back to their normal.  Last week we learned Tom is now dealing with a collapsed lung.  He cannot walk yet and needs to stay either in bed or in a wheelchair for at least another four weeks.

Tom is a 28 year employee of the Omaha YMCA organization.  He is an active cyclist and marathon runner.  If you know Tom, you know how hard it will be for him to sit still for the next 12 weeks!  Tom’s wife, Julie works at Creighton at both the Osteoporosis Research Center and Clinical Research Office and their son, Vaughn is a 7th grader at St. Pius X / St. Leo.

We are asking for your help in helping the family meet their $10,000 deductible, out-of-pocket, and other expenses associated with both Tom and Julie being out of work for the next 12 weeks.
