Support This Small Family

Aloha friends, family, and kind strangers I have never met before. My heart is saddened to share this news, but my future brother in law, Codee, has been in a terrible accident; A head on collision on the highway. I am relieved to say that he is going to live through this traumatic incident, but he has a very long road to recovery ahead of him.

Codee is a young 26 year old father-to-be. He is caring, open-minded, has the best sense of humour, one of the most outgoing people I have ever met. He has this ability to start a conversation with just about anyone and become their best friend by the end of it. Most of all he loves my sister, and he is so excited to become a father. He is having his first son, Riley James, with my younger sister Katelyn. Their baby is due on the 22nd of October, which is this month.

He currently remains in the hospital, his doctor anticipates he will have to stay there for another 2 - 3 weeks. Which means whether or not he will be available when my sister delivers the baby is in question.

His injuries are immense. The seatbelt he was wearing at the time of the collision cut into his gut, rupturing his intestines, his colon, and severing his abdominal muscles. He also shattered his hip and broke his hand. He immediately went into a surgery that lasted a few hours where the doctors found that they were unable to repair the damage in his abdomen at this time. They removed a portion of his intestines and, as a temporary solution, has to wear a colostomy bag for the next 3 to 6 months until the inflammation of his organs subsides. He will then undergo another surgery to see if they can then repair his intestines, and if he will regain function of his colon. Which they are still unsure of how bad the damage is. (For those who are unaware of what a colostomy bag is, it is a bag that basically replaces the function of your colon. Rather than moving through the digestive tract, bodily waste goes straight into the bag, which rests outside of the abdomen, and you have to empty it out when it gets full. Not something you want, or should, be dealing with at 26 years old. Or at any time in life for that matter.)

He suffered no head injuries, which we are extremely grateful for, but he is still left temporarily disabled. Which is going to put a lot of stress on this family's lives for a short time.

His recovery could be as short as 4 months to as long as a year, and in the worst case scenario he could be living the rest of his life wearing a colostomy bag. Which, is manageable, but will put limitations on what he can do and how he can live.

Although most of his medical bills will be covered by insurance, it will not cover any of their living expenses as neither of them will be in any shape to work for at least the next few months; my sister will have to take on the reponsibility of taking care of their newborn along with Codee.
