In South Korea, the biggest media companies from the authoritarian era are still dominant today. The top three newspapers – the Chosun, JoongAng, and Dong-A dailies – provide extremely heavily biased coverage for the conservative party, business conglomerates, and their views. These articles make up most of the content on portal sites Naver and Daum, where most Koreans get their news. It’s no wonder that only 32 percent of South Koreans trust the media, according to 2021 Oxford-Reuters Institute Digital News Report, ranking 38th out of 46 countries.

 

In this biased landscape, only a handful of objective media outlets were brave enough to report news with honesty during the presidential election campaign period, reporting on 170 allegations of fraudulent and illegal acts committed by Yoon Suk-yeol, his wife Kim Keon-hee and her mother, Choi Eun-soon. These allegations range from Kim’s stock manipulation of 5 billion Won to falsified credentials in the résumés and many already have a copious amount of evidence to support them. Moreover, despite these numerous allegations, no prosecutorial proceedings have been initiated.

 

Most of the mainstream media outlets never covered any of these 170 allegations, showing their favoritism toward Yoon and his conservative party in a shockingly open manner. Even those that reluctantly wrote about some of these topics did so with a very partisan point of view, often obscuring important facts that directly point to Yoon and his family's alleged wrongdoings.

 

Backed by the extremely loyal mainstream media, merely two days after Yoon was elected, his wife Kim Keon-hee sued the Voice of Seoul for 1 million Won, reacting in accordance to her vow to "jail all critical journalists” after she gained power as revealed in the recordings of Kim's voice as published in January 2022. A few days later, a member of Yoon's party attended Kim Eo-jun's News Factory radio show and told the host Kim Eo-jun to "get ready to vacate his room", indicating that things won't get easier for any media outlets that do not give preferential treatment to Yoon. Both the Voice of Seoul and Kim Eo-jun have both dared to tell the truth during the election campaign period and are continuing to do so even now.

 

The Voice of Seoul has an immediate need for our support. We cannot let it be ravaged by Kim Keon-hee's barefaced political revenge. We cannot let Yoon and Kim oppress journalism and mold it the way they want. The unbiased press is the bedrock of democracy and we need to ensure the survival of the precious few that are doing the job that they are supposed to do.
