Support the Palmers in Rebuilding Their Bakery

Donation protected

Hi Friends & Community,

My name is Sarah Ha and I'm creating this fundraiser on behalf of my chosen family, Aunt Joan and Kia Palmer, the dynamic Mother - Daughter duo who own and run Palmer's Sweetery & Cafe in Maplewood, NJ. They are the sweetest, most hard-working and good hearted people I know. They are always among the first to show up for their community and loved ones even in spite of navigating the impact of the pandemic as small business owners themselves.

On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, Hurricane Ida caused severe flooding in the Northeast, damaging lives, homes and businesses.

Like much of northern New Jersey, the storm submerged Palmer's Sweetery & Cafe. The bakery's electricity is still not on, and the landlord isn't sure when it will be back up because the building's electrical system has to be completely redone due to the storm's damage.

The bakery is now in the process of cleaning up the aftermath of the multiple feet of water that had surged into the bakery. Their plans to reopen next Wednesday are looking quite impossible as of now; we don't now when the store will be able to open up again based on the damage. Without power, the clean up is even more tricky.

The bakery is incredibly grateful for the kind words, flowers, lattes, offers to help them clean up, insurance tips, and all other gestures. They are thinking of all neighbors impacted by this storm and how rough the last two years have been for everyone.

Every dollar to contribute to this rebuilding of the bakery is appreciated. These funds will help with heavy duty cleaning supplies, the cleaning and disinfecting teams, and the salary for staff who may not be able to work for 2 weeks.

If you can’t donate, it would mean the world to the bakery and our friends if you can share the GoFundMe page.

Please join us in supporting our beloved Palmer family!

About the Palmers:

Located in Maplewood, Palmer's specializes in small-batch, handcrafted sweets and savories. Our shop produces unique artisan treats, filled with love and quality ingredients. We pride ourselves on keeping the fun in our food.

Although the doors opened in February 2016, the seeds were planted long before. Food has always been an integral part of the Palmer family. The eldest of four, Joan (aka Momma Palmer) took over the family cooking and baking responsibilities at an early age. Her pineapple upside down cake was killer! It was inevitable that her love for food made its way down to the next generation. However, it took a departure from a career in advertising and a 2 year stint at the CIA before Kia (the daughter) officially entered into the food world. Fast forward a few years and a couple of great kitchens later (Eleven Madison Park, Ninety Acres, Splashlight Studios), and it was time to venture out and create something personal and special. After one amazing sweet talk, Kia convinced Joan to come out of retirement and join her as a business partner. This Mother - Daughter duo had one goal….to open a space that created moments of joy through food. It is their hope that you find a little piece of happiness when you visit.
