Support the Minteshreen face mask initiative

June 10th update: due to multiple news stories about money transfers to Lebanon being blocked we will be disabling donations to this campaign. Please check back as we will re-enable them if this turns out to be false or if they are later allowed again. Meanwhile I am transferring what has already been donated ASAP With the value of the Lebanese Pound tanking and unemployment estimated at ~ 60%, people see the risk of starvation as an even bigger threat than the spread of COVID-19.

Non-profit Minteshreen is tackling the hunger issue with their food box initiative (GoFundMe here ), but the harsh reality is that while people need food, they also need to stay healthy for anything else to matter.

In light of this pandemic that is likely to last much longer, Minteshreen designed and produced face masks made locally in Lebanon. The masks are machine washable and adjustable. For every mask that they sell for LL3,000 (less than $1 at today's rate) they are donating one free mask. There was a story by The Guardian about the initiative (video here). Activist Gino Raidy also blogged about it here

The cost of cotton is rising and Minteshreen is trying to keep the mask price fixed. Your donation will allow them to continue to sell affordable masks and distribute free ones to communities that need them the most. They will include them in their food donation boxes. They will provide them to protesters they find not wearing PPE on the streets. They will also provide them to people in designated outbreak hotspots across the country.

I ask you to support this plan to take care of our community's most vulnerable. Please donate whatever you can, and if you can't, I would be very thankful if you could share this link.

Who will the money go to?

The money will go to the Minteshreen Face Mask initiative. Their instagram account is @minteshreen if you want to learn more about them. You can also WhatsApp them at +961 3 814 787. Their website is but note it is under construction as of May 14. Some pictures of the masks in action:

Who am I?

I am a Lebanese American living in New York helping get the money from the expat community to the organizations who will put it to the best possible use. I feel that we the expats are one of the few that can help in this difficult time. You can check my Instagram account @joeymoawad and my linkedin profile
Feel free to reach out to me and I will try to address any concerns you may have.

How does the money get there?

The money will come into my US account and then get bank transferred to Lebanon on a monthly basis. I will post bank transfer and donation acknowledgement receipts here  for full transparency.
