On 11/18/22, the Mendez family received the news every parent dreads. Their sweet daughter Sophia had to be flown out to UCSF in Oakland to have an emergency surgery. Anyone who knows the Mendez Family knows how generous and giving they are. Always willing to help others, their community, and especially family. Over the last several months, they have endured several set backs that have been devastating to them personally. Most would not know this because they continue to give their time and energy to others while going through their own struggles. Anyone who has met Sophia knows she is a sweet, funny and energetic girl with a huge heart just like her amazing parents. Her dad Juan is a local correctional officer in Humboldt who works long hard days, plus mandatory overtime due to short staffing and Mom Erica works two jobs herself all while volunteering her time anyway she can for her kids.
