Support the Lakota Riders

Donation protected
Dear friends,

Each December, members of the Lakota Nation ride for over 2 weeks and 300 miles across South Dakota to commemorate the massacre of their people in 1890 at Wounded Knee. Simultaneously, another group of riders journey 300 miles to Mankato, Minnesota, to honor the 38 Dakota men that were executed there in 1862. These two tragic events represent the largest massacre and the largest mass execution in US history.

It has been my honor to ride with the Lakota community for the past four years to Wounded Knee. This year, I will join the Screaming Eagles group that rides to Mankato.

The rides themselves are challenging in every way - physical, emotional, and spiritual. The temperature can reach below -30 in white-out snowstorms, the terrain is across frozen country or on icy roads, and the heart-felt weight of what the rides represent can be staggering. But it is this sacrifice of the riders and horses that strengthens the community as they connect to their culture, their past and one another. A massive caravan of family and friends follow the riders in support--camping, cooking, laughing, and creating a positive shared experience that helps people meet the challenges in their community today.

These are also inward journeys as much as they are physical. Prayers are offered throughout for each other, native communities, and for the world so that hope and courage may be restored.

On the rides, people pile up in cars to save on fuel costs, swap-out warm clothes, food for rider and horse alike is always in need, and many young ones join in that need to be supported by the community. I am raising funds now for food, gas, warm clothing, and equipment costs that they can't meet on their own. Each dollar raised will go directly to the riders and their families, and the funds will be used for expenses made now in preparation, and through the duration of the rides.

I urge you to help support this movement of the Lakota community that responds to the great injustices they have faced, and their current hardships, with this brave journey committed to helping their people - and us all. Please join me, and contribute what you can now.

Thank you so much,
Ziggy
