It only took 2 months to turn our lives upside down.
In June 2019, my otherwise healthy and fit husband, James, was given a life shattering diagnosis: ADVANCED STAGE HEART FAILURE due to MYOCARDITIS.
Myocarditis is a rare condition that affects otherwise healthy people. Typically a virus enters the body, then enters the blood and travels to the heart. In most cases this is mild and spontaneously resolves. In my husband’s case it has lead to heart failure.
James was medically evacuated from his duty station in Hawaii in order to save his life. Since arriving in San Diego, my husband has been on full life support. Tomorrow he undergoes a procedure to implant a device into his heart which will serve as a “bridge to transplant” until he is strong enough for a heart transplant.
I am currently in San Diego to be with James while our 4 children temporarily  remain in Hawaii with family. Although the Navy will reimburse for some costs, this has lead to extreme financial and emotional stress for our family, and uncertainty about what the future will hold.
