Meet Brian Kennedy, Stephen O’Mara and Thomas Maloney Westgård - The Irish Cross Country Skiing team.
Ireland is currently ranked 20th in the world in cross country skiing and that is thanks to the efforts made by these three amazing athletes. Brian, Stephen and Thomas are racing at an olympic qualification level as individuals - but, this will also give Ireland their first possibility to have a relay team on the international stage! That said, they are a long way from being able to afford the ideal programme of preparation for the upcoming 2021/22 season.
Cross Country Skiing is a small sport in Ireland, possibly unknown to many and we want to change that. We present to you the story of Brian, Stephen and Thomas featured in our video - here you can learn some more about the sport and get to know their stories. Our athletes live in Norway, Finland and the U.S but they are all united by the green, white and orange. Their choice to ski for Ireland comes from a deep pride they feel holding this heritage. They want to see Ireland as a strong contender in the sport.
Unfortunately, Cross Country Skiing is not as glamorous as it would appear on TV. This is an extremely expensive sport and our athletes are operating at a loss, everything required to be a cross country skier is funded by the individual. This includes flights, accommodation, proper nutrition, equipment (skis, poles, uniforms, ski waxing etc), training, coaches and licences. We appreciate any donation to help towards these costs to keep our boys in green on the snow.
Thank you and go raibh maith agat.
