Gumbaynggirr Conservation Group

Reconciliation in practice.

The Gumbaynggirr Conservation Group is a historic alliance between Gooris and environmentalists to protect Country and advocate for land rights for the sacred relationship between Country, Kin and Culture.
48192260_1599812406440726_r.jpegGumbaynggirr Conservation Group was born during the fight to save Nambucca State Forest in May 2020 from the negligence of Forestry Corporation NSW, who failed to respect cultural significance of the land and perpetuate further environmental threat following the catastrophic 2019 bushfire season.

Following strong community presence and pressure, Forestry Corporation was forced to withdraw machinery from Nambucca SF and completed less than 50% of their planned operation. For over 8 weeks the GCG Camp held its ground at the Nambucca SF edge,  developing the alliance between Custodians and Environmentalists.
48192260_1599812486549044_r.jpegThe GCG has since carried out multiple non-violent direct actions against Forestry Corporation across Gumbaynggirr Homelands, gaining national media attention, suspending and stopping logging operations and exposing cases of illegal logging.

The GCG now sets forward to protect and nurture all Gumbaynggirr homelands, people, flora and fauna, culture and language through the lense of Gumbaynggirr spiritual practice and lore.

The group draws on both ancient and cutting-edge science-based methods that have proven to be sustainable to land, people, animals, totems and culture. This First Nations led campaign sees inclusive cultural education activities and workshops and an ecological surveying practice.

The allyship looks to build a framework that can be replicated by communities across the nation in order to protect Country, preserve language and celebrate culture, so that future generations can relish in the beauty of Gumbaynggirr homelands and culture.
