<div>Our beloved father, Gilberto Gracia Caballero, is 54 years old. He is a funny, outgoing, and kind-hearted man who has always brought joy to everyone around him. He loves cooking, listening to his old-school music while playing his deck of cards, and spending time with his family and friends. Anyone who knows him knows how generous, caring, and hardworking he is.

<div>For years, Gilberto faced serious health challenges with incredible strength and determination. He had been on dialysis for nearly 11 years and was frequently in and out of the hospital due to ongoing kidney-related health issues. In May 2026, he underwent surgery to receive a pacemaker due to complications with his heart. Despite everything he endured, he never lost his sense of humor or his positive outlook on life. He would often tell us that he had “eight lives like a cat” because he had overcome so many surgeries and medical obstacles. Time and time again, he proved how strong he was.

<div>Tragically, the accident that changed our lives had nothing to do with his medical conditions. On what should have been a routine trip home from dialysis, he was struck by a vehicle. After everything he had already fought through, our family never imagined that this heartbreaking accident would become the greatest battle of his life.

<div>On June 2, 2026, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Gilberto was returning home from his dialysis appointment in San Diego, California. While crossing near the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and 54th Street, he was struck by a vehicle. In a matter of seconds, our family’s lives changed forever.

<div>On June 5, we finally received the devastating call that Gilberto had been admitted to the hospital. We learned that he had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury with subarachnoid hemorrhages (bleeding around the brain), multiple fractured ribs, lacerations to his shoulder and legs, and fluid in his abdomen and lungs. Due to the severity of his brain injuries, the trauma team had to perform emergency brain surgery, including removing damaged brain tissue, in an effort to save his life.

<div>As his condition remained critical, doctors also had to perform a tracheostomy to help him breathe and connect him to a mechanical ventilator for long-term respiratory support. He remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), requiring around-the-clock care from his medical team.

<div>Despite the incredible efforts of his doctors and nurses, Gilberto has not regained consciousness or been able to follow commands. He has since been transferred to a Critical Illness Recovery Hospital, where he continues to fight every single day. Although he remains in critical condition, our family continues to hold onto hope, pray for a miracle, and stay by his side throughout this unimaginable journey.

<div>This tragedy has placed an enormous emotional and financial burden on our family. The funds raised will help cover his ongoing medical expenses, rehabilitation and long-term care, travel expenses for our family, legal expenses related to the accident, lost income due to time away from work, and the many unexpected costs we have faced during this difficult time.

<div>Gilberto is more than the injuries he suffered. He is a loving father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend whose kindness has touched so many lives. He has always been the type of person to put others before himself—offering a helping hand, sharing a laugh, or preparing a meal that brought everyone together. Seeing someone so full of life fighting this battle has been heartbreaking for our family, but we continue to hold onto hope and pray for a miracle every single day.

<div>Durante años, Gilberto enfrentó serios problemas de salud con una fortaleza y determinación admirables. Estuvo en diálisis durante casi 11 años y con frecuencia entraba y salía del hospital debido a complicaciones relacionadas con sus riñones. En mayo de 2026 fue sometido a una cirugía para colocarle un marcapasos debido a complicaciones cardíacas. A pesar de todo lo que vivió, nunca perdió su sentido del humor ni su actitud positiva ante la vida. Siempre nos decía que tenía “ocho vidas como los gatos” porque había logrado superar tantas cirugías y obstáculos médicos. Una y otra vez nos demostró la gran fortaleza que tenía.

<div>Trágicamente, el accidente que cambió nuestras vidas no tuvo nada que ver con sus condiciones médicas. Lo que debía ser un regreso rutinario a casa después de su tratamiento de diálisis terminó convirtiéndose en la mayor batalla de su vida cuando fue atropellado por un vehículo. Después de todo lo que ya había logrado superar, jamás imaginamos que enfrentaríamos una tragedia como esta.

<div>El 2 de junio de 2026, aproximadamente a las 4:15 de la tarde, Gilberto regresaba a casa después de su cita de diálisis en San Diego, California. Mientras cruzaba cerca de la intersección de El Cajon Boulevard y la calle 54, fue atropellado por un vehículo. En cuestión de segundos, la vida de toda nuestra familia cambió para siempre.

<div>El 5 de junio recibimos la devastadora llamada informándonos que Gilberto había sido ingresado al hospital. Nos informaron que había sufrido una lesión cerebral traumática grave con hemorragias subaracnoideas (sangrado alrededor del cerebro), múltiples fracturas en las costillas, laceraciones en el hombro y las piernas, además de acumulación de líquido en el abdomen y los pulmones. Debido a la gravedad de sus lesiones cerebrales, el equipo de trauma tuvo que realizar una cirugía de emergencia en el cerebro, incluyendo la extracción de tejido cerebral dañado, en un esfuerzo por salvarle la vida.

<div>Debido a que su estado continuaba siendo crítico, los médicos también tuvieron que realizarle una traqueostomía para ayudarlo a respirar y conectarlo a un ventilador mecánico para brindarle soporte respiratorio a largo plazo. Permaneció en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI), recibiendo atención médica las 24 horas del día.

<div>A pesar de los incansables esfuerzos de sus médicos y enfermeros, Gilberto no ha recuperado la conciencia ni ha podido responder a órdenes. Desde entonces fue trasladado a un Hospital de Recuperación para Enfermedades Críticas, donde continúa luchando cada día. Aunque su condición sigue siendo crítica, nuestra familia no pierde la esperanza, continúa orando por un milagro y permanece a su lado durante este difícil e inimaginable proceso.

<div>Esta tragedia ha representado una enorme carga emocional y económica para nuestra familia. Los fondos recaudados ayudarán a cubrir sus gastos médicos continuos, rehabilitación y cuidados a largo plazo, los gastos de viaje de nuestra familia para poder acompañarlo, gastos legales relacionados con el accidente, la pérdida de ingresos debido al tiempo que hemos tenido que dejar de trabajar y muchos otros gastos inesperados que han surgido durante este difícil momento.
