Support the Family of Alfredo Cabrera Liconia

On Thursday, November 12th, Alfredo Cabrera Licona was struck and killed by a tractor trailer at the corner of Crescent Street and Astoria Boulevard in Astoria, Queens. A delivery worker, he was close to finishing up his shift for the day when the truck made a reckless right-hand turn into the Crescent Street bike lane, pining Alfredo beneath its wheels. He survived briefly as first responders worked to free him, but later died of his injuries at a local hospital.
Alfredo was only 35 years old. A Mexican immigrant, he came to New York almost 10 years ago to provide for his wife and two children, now ages 8 and 11, who live in Mexico. At the time of his death, he was planning to visit Mexico for the first time since he left to finally meet his youngest son, who was born after he came to the United States.
Alfredo died because of inadequate road safety infrastructure in the Astoria neighborhood that incentivizes the kind of reckless driving that took his life. New York City's Department of Transportation had been alerted to the danger of this particular stretch of roadway by local officials less than one month prior to the accident, and they urged the city to implement badly needed infrastructure improvements before tragedy struck.
Unfortunately, the city dragged its feet, and now Alfredo is gone. And others like him will die in the future until appropriate safety improvements are made in Astoria and to bike lanes throughout the city. And it is immigrants and essential workers like Alfredo who will continue to be most exposed to the risks and most impacted when they inevitably come to a head, as they are the people who we rely on to keep our city running as a second wave of COVID-19 crests around the country.
Astoria officials will continue to vigorously advocate for these safety improvements to be made. In the meantime, we ask that you stand in solidarity with Alfredo and his family, as they struggle to go on without the husband, father, and breadwinner they loved and leaned on.

Hello everyone, my name is Zohran Kwame Mamdani and I am the Assemblymember-elect of Astoria. I met Alfredo's family at an impromptu vigil at the site of his death. This is a fundraiser that I set up with their consent and for their benefit, which is why the listed beneficiary is Alfredo's sister-in-law Amanda Saldivar. The money will be spent to support Alfredo's family, especially his wife and their two young children.
After meeting our initial goal of $10,000 rather quickly thanks to the generosity of the Astoria community, we've consulted with Alfredo's family and decided to raise the goal to a final figure of $15,000. They told us they've been overwhelmed by the support they've received and are incredibly grateful to everyone who has chipped in to help them out.
