The Atlas Initiative - Nigeria

Donation protected
On 3 November 2018, I am doing a 20 kilometre walk to support the Atlas Initiative. The Atlas Initiative works in Ikorodu, Nigeria. They identify young people living in poor communities who cannot afford to enrol in school, and then they provide financial and social support to young people and their families so that these young people can get to school and stay in school.

According to Nigerian newspaper The Guardian , only 39% of Nigerian children of primary school age are enrolled in school. Young people living in poor communities are far less likely to be enrolled.

In 2016, I travelled to Ikorodu Nigeria to work with the International Citizens Service (ICS). There I met some amazing young men who met whilst volunteering for ICS, and they decided to begin volunteering their time to help young people living in poor areas around Ikorodu to start school.  These young men decided to begin the Atlas Initiative to continue this work. You can learn more about the Atlas Initiative here.

I was so impressed and inspired by the dedication of these young men, and I met some of the young people who were able to get back to school because of their efforts. So, I am walking to support them.

My friend Major tells me that it costs USD $18 to get one young person back to school. This covers the costs of items such as school books and equipment and uniforms. When they send a young person to school, they also do periodic check-ins with that young person to see how they are going (I have personally seen them do this), and they also work with the young person's mother to help them to enter into sustainable employment (or start or grow a business) - so that families can then continue to pay for education costs.

The WALK

My friend Louise and I are walking in the Macedon Ranges . The Macedon Ranges is located approximately 60 kilometers outside of Melbourne, Australia. The traditional custodians of the Macedon Ranges are the people of the Kulin nation.
