Sustainable Roanoke is a grassroots environmental group that I started on Facebook in May 2019 in order to provide a forum for people who want to help make Roanoke (the city and the county) more sustainable.
Because of climate change, humanity is currently facing the most serious crisis of its existence and, for those who want to do something about it, the magnitude of the challenges may feel overwhelming. But we are not without agency. Every single person can decide to stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution, by moving away from practices that have a negative impact on their environment, by adopting simple habits that will lessen or even reverse that impact, and by encouraging others to do the same.
Through SR, members share information, exchange opinions, and make calls to action. We have organized visits to our local sorting facility to learn what happens to our recyclables, a climate strike, and 7 recycling events, our most successful endeavor to date. We collect materials that are not accepted by our local sorting facility and ship them off to be recycled in different parts of the country.
