<div>Hey everyone, Harley here. Spike is my (almost 4 year old) cat, and next to his sister, the love of my life. On Sunday August 3rd, I woke up at 4 am and grabbed some water. On my way back to my bed, I instinctively grazed my hand over the area of the bed where Spike always sleeps to find that he was not there- not extremely unusual but he does sleep with me every night. I turned on the lights to find a large sized fresh blood stain where he typically sleeps. There were also bloodied paw prints on the floor throughout the entire house that led me to where he was. I found him sitting in a puddle of his own blood. I panicked, and noticed it was coming from a spot on his arm that was once a small "cyst." I put "cyst" in quotations as I was guided by (emergency) vets upon initially reaching out about it when I first saw it not long ago that a cyst was most likely the culprit. The spot grew rapidly in a matter of days, and on this early Sunday morning it ruptured and was profusely bleeding. I filled nearly 25 wads of paper towel with his blood. I couldn't get the blood to stop, so I took him to the Emergency Vet nearby, as his typical vet's office was closed. I had to take him to this same emergency vet on a Sunday only 5 months ago for an emergency urinary surgery that cost nearly $4,000. After these doctors at the emergency vet hospital cleaned him up, they too, had trouble stopping the bleeding, and resorted to a gauze bandage for him to wear overnight. They also gave him antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory injection. He was to see his regular vet the next day (yesterday, Monday August 4th). The vet examined him and was confident that this was not a cyst, especially as it is not behaving as one, and told me she was worried it could be a mass. There is a rare malignant cancer in cats called Cutaneous Hemangiosarcoma that specifically targets "light colored" or white cats. It is a pretty severe cancer. He was scheduled this morning to get it removed, and about an hour after dropping him off (luckily I was still in the parking lot- not able to drive), the doctor called with news that his red blood cell count is significantly low. A normal percentage of red blood cells for cats is 40%, and anything below 20% requires emergency blood transfusion. Spike is currently at 20% on the dot. The vet gave me the option to take him home for another seven days to get his blood cell count up, and advised that anesthesia would be dangerous to administer as he "might not make it." With those words, I immediately obliged with her advice. The hard part is, his mass can rupture again given its fragile nature. He will need specific medicine for the next seven days (on top of his antibiotics) in order to help stop the bleeding if bleeding does occur. He will also need surgery to remove the mass, a biopsy, and a scan to ensure there are no other (potentially cancerous) masses inside of his body. The doctor looked me in the eye, and told me it is a possibility though, to prepare- given the amount of blood loss. I will do anything for this cat, and if it weren't for an error that took place quite literally only a week ago (the California Franchise Tax Board wrongfully took $12,734 from my bank account and are working to get it back but it is not guaranteed)- I probably wouldn't reach out like this as I feel I can always find a way on my own (stubbornly so). Even a dollar would help in this situation, and there is zero pressure to donate. But I would appreciate it more than words. I will do anything to help Spike's health and safe his life.
