Hello, my name is Solara Morales!

You may be wondering why I even want to go on this trip. I attend Harbor Middle School in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where we believe that students learn best by confronting and addressing critical issues in our communities and the surrounding harbor through place-based projects. One great example of this is Costa Rica.

In our humanities class, we took the initiative to explore the environmental issues facing Costa Rica and developed potential solutions to address them. As an 8th grader, I have spent my middle school years analyzing New York's environmental challenges. Thanks to Harbor Middle School, I have gained a deeper understanding of these issues and have been given the chance to raise awareness and share my findings with my community. Our students have already begun taking steps toward achieving our goals, and in our STEAM classes, we have built a hydroponic lab to tackle the food deserts our community is facing.

This trip to Costa Rica represents the next step in my educational journey. During our visit, we will gain hands-on experience with significant issues. We will have many opportunities to connect our classroom knowledge with diverse ecosystems and real-world challenges, inspiring us to become active caretakers of our planet.
