<div>My parents, Sharon (78) and Fidel (79), have always been the people others turn to for help. Fidel is a proud Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army, and Sharon is a retired nurse who spent her life caring for others. They are generous, kind, and quietly give everything they have without ever expecting anything in return. Asking for help is something they would never do themselves, which is why we are sharing their story now.

<div>In early November, my mom experienced a serious medical emergency that quickly changed everything. What began with weakness and illness led to multiple falls at home and a trip to the hospital. From there, her health rapidly declined, and she was diagnosed with several serious conditions, including pneumonia in her left lung, sleep apnea requiring a BiPAP machine, respiratory complications, heart failure, and a serious urinary tract infection, all of which required intensive medical care.

<div>Since then, my mom has been intubated twice placed on life support, hospitalized three times, transferred between two hospitals, and moved through two different skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities as she works to regain strength through physical and occupational therapy. Her recovery has been slow and unpredictable, but she continues to fight every day.

<div>Her insurance covers only 21 days of skilled nursing care at a $20-per-day copay. After those 21 days, the cost increases to $250 per day. Sharon and Fidel live on a fixed retirement income, and these expenses quickly become overwhelming—especially as Sharon clearly needs additional skilled care or in-home support to continue healing.While Sharon was fighting for her life, Fidel faced his own serious health crisis. He was admitted to the hospital and required heart pacemaker surgery. After his discharge, he began recovering right alongside Sharon, with both of them navigating major medical challenges at the same time.
Our family has shown up in every way possible—offering prayers, time, love, and support. We are incredibly grateful. Even so, the ongoing medical costs, transportation needs, and daily living expenses have become more than we can manage alone. Transportation has been especially difficult, as my parents do not have reliable means and have had to depend on others to get to and from medical appointments.
Despite everything, my parents continue to give to others. Years ago, they took on guardianship of a child who is not related to us by blood. He came into their lives at just one year old and is now 13. Even in their late 70s, they stepped in to provide love, stability, and a safe home when a child needed them most.
They spent their 58th wedding anniversary in the hospital, along with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now they face a new year filled with uncertainty.
Fidel is slowly recovering. Sharon still has a long road ahead. Some doctors are amazed by her strength; others can’t believe she is still here. There have been moments when we were prepared for the worst, but our family remains hopeful, faithful, and united in prayer.
We are asking for help to cover medical expenses, extended skilled nursing or in-home care, transportation, and basic living costs so Sharon and Fidel can focus on healing rather than financial stress.
