Support Sergio's Homecoming from Prison

Our friend, long-time Change Agent contributor, and fellow political activist, Sergio Hyland, is returning to his community after more than 20 years in prison.

 

We are setting up this fundraiser to support his homecoming. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by his release date in early February 2022.

 

Sergio started his time in prison as an angry, frustrated 18-year-old, but through the mentorship of political prisoners, he gained an analysis of how the world works and the discipline to redirect his anger. He has deployed his understanding in numerous ways – editing the prison newsletter, working as a peer support specialist, acting as a correspondent for Prison Radio , and writing pieces for The Change Agent  since 2013.

 

In his 2016 Change Agent article, “Divided We Fall,” he wrote: “Even now, in my mid-thirties, I’m still angry— but not towards whites. My anger is towards a system responsible for creating differences among human beings and giving us incentives to hate each other for those differences.”

 

Your contribution will help Sergio with basic necessities as he gets out of prison – rent, a phone, a laptop, etc. With your support during this transition, Sergio will be able to pursue his plan to continue using his voice and his experience to raise awareness, mobilize his community, and develop his outside-of-prison presence in the struggle for social justice.

A NOTE FROM SERGIO:
I want to thank each one of you for helping me in my transition from incarceration, to reintegration. While I understand that nobody owes me anything, I also understand that nobody can reach any height of significance on their own. During these past two decades of incarceration, I have worked tirelessly to discover who I really am, and what my mission on this earth really is. It hasn't been easy, but I know that my purpose is to inspire change, through correct action. And as I mentioned earlier, I couldn't have done it on my own. I wouldn't be who I am today, if it weren't for those who supported me over the years - my friends at The Change Agent, and countless others. Your contribution will help me with so much. But most importantly, it will help me continue to use my story to inspire those who, like me, were hopeless at one point. Thank you so much for everything!
