On the morning of Wednesday Sept 10, Bradd Benjamin (Sean) Sweeny lost his life. After a prolonged period of challenge and adversity as a single father, attempting to manage his own affairs and the needs of his children, suffering from unresolved and untreated mental health, Sean was shot and killed in an unfortunate encounter with St John’s County sheriffs' deputies. The cumulative effects of stress, anxiety, lack of resources, and untreated mental health had slowly taken its toll. He’d been deteriorating mentally for some time, as witnessed by all who knew him. A neighbor called 911 after an encounter with them, and sheriff’s deputies were dispatched. Upon arriving at the scene, Sean was ordered to drop his legally licensed pistol, which he immediately did, and for unknown reasons, in his manic state, Sean turned and reached toward the pistol on the ground. Both officers opened fire and Sean died at the scene. A tragic end to a once vibrant and caring man.
Sean was a proud and loving father to his children. His love for his family was immeasurable. He was a true craftsman and had a passion for creating with his hands. From building surf boards, to mastering stone masonry and carpentry, and all things in between. He found joy in helping bring other people’s visions to life. Sean was known as a peaceful, kind, tender, loving human, and father. He was a loving friend to everyone who knew and loved him. This was an avoidable tragedy that has shocked the local community, as Sean was not resourced well enough to seek the mental help he so needed.
In the wake of his death, his two children ages 8 and 12 have been left without a father, traumatized from the loss of their parent, and years of adversity and uncertainty. This fundraiser is being created by his family for the sole purpose of helping his children. They are innocent kids who are going to need support, most especially prolonged psychological counseling to help them navigate through the trauma, as well as help providing the basic necessities such as food, clothing, and school items. The funds will be managed by Sean's sister, a responsible and balanced adult, to be dispensed as needed for both of his children. We’re hoping that our local community will come together to help support a worthy cause. This is all about his children. If you’re reading this, I’d ask you to consider the effects of this happening in your own family, or to a close friend.
I’m asking those of you with compassion and understanding to contribute what you can, even if only a small donation. Right now, his children, my niece and nephew, are in need of support. If it be within your ability to do so, please help us, help them. Thank you.
