<div>In May 2025, we are bringing respected indigenous elders, advocates and activists from Mexico, Central and South America, and Australia together with Alaskan elders and environmental activists for a sacred gathering. This gathering, called a <strong><em>Koo.eex,</em></strong> is sponsored by <a href="https://www.herringprotectors.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Herring Protectors</a>, a grassroots movement led by indigenous women. The Herring Protectors use the original teachings of the<em> Kiks.adi </em>women—ceremony and collective organizing—to stand up to unjust legacies of colonization and genocide that led to the devastation of the herring across Alaska.

<div>In 2024, representatives of The Herring Protectors and the <a href="https://womensvoicesproject.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Women’s Voices Project</a> attended both the Herring Protectors <em>Koo.eex</em> and a sacred 8th Fire Gathering in Palenque, Mexico. There the idea of bringing these relatives together in Sitka, Alaska, for further ceremony and consultation on how to support each other's work was born. These elders each bring unique wisdom from their territories - where each is actively focused on preserving the environment and dealing with the effects of climate change. Our invited delegates are stewards of their lands. Bringing them together will further the wisdom of these ancient lineages in helping the earth at this important time.
