People across the globe have been suffering the devastating consequences of the coronavirus epidemic, and those with already precarious lives have been particularly severely affected.
Bien des gens à travers le monde entier souffrent les conséquences du coronavirus, et ceux avec des conditions de vie déjà précaires sont encore plus sévèrement affectés.
In a bid to slow the spread of Covid-19, the Rwandan government entered lockdown more than a month ago. That meant no more weddings. No more festivals. No more social gatherings. And for the Future Vision Acrobats -a Rwandan circus group- all this meant no more income.
Dans le but de freiner l’épidémie, le Rwanda est entré en confinement il y a plus d’un mois. Pendant cette période, il n’y aura plus de mariages. Plus de festivals. Plus de rassemblements sociaux du tout. Et pour les Future Vision Acrobats -une troupe de cirque Rwandaise- tout cela implique plus d’entrée financière.
Future Vision Acrobats is a grassroots circus built up by street children, survivors of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide against the Tutsi. In 2012, they created this group with a simple idea: to replace all their surrounding negativity with talent. They have been making a modest living from it ever since, performing at weddings, festivals, parties and all sorts of events, all the while taking care of young people within their community.
Future Vision Acrobats est un cirque populaire, construit par des gamins de rues, survivants du Génocide contre les Tutsi de 1994. En 2012, ils ont formé ce groupe avec une idée très simple en tête : celle de remplacer la négativité environnante avec leur talent. Depuis lors, ils poursuivent un style de vie modeste, et gagnent leur vie par leurs spectacles, en plus de s’occuper des jeunes de leur quartier.
I had the privilege to meet with these wonderful people in the summer of 2018, as a 16-year old kid, eager to learn the intricacies of circus life. The idea was that they would teach me the performing arts, and I would teach them how to do illusions with a deck of cards, to add to their arsenal of talent.
J’ai eu le privilège de rencontrer ces gens dans l’été de 2018, à 16 ans, désireux d’apprendre les subtilités de la vie du cirque. L’idée était très simple : eux m’apprendraient les arts du spectacle, et moi je leur ferais connaître l’illusionisme avec un jeu de cartes.
Despite their limited means, they opened their home up to me: for almost 4 weeks, I lived among them, trained with them and laughed alongside them. But I also came to understand the nature of their economic hardships, most notably the absence of running water.
Malgré leurs moyens limités, ils m’ont ouvert leurs portes : pendant presque 4 semaines, l’on vivait ensemble, on s’entrainait ensemble et on riait ensemble. Cela dit, j'ai également vécu dans le contexte de leurs difficultés économiques, dont notamment l'absence d'eau courante.
As people living simple lives never far from poverty, these strains have become ever more pronounced since the lockdown. Quite simply: they haven’t made a penny in the past month and a half, nor do they see any light at the end of the tunnel. This is why 100% of your donations will go directly to these wonderful people, to keep alive the positive spirit of the Future Vision Acrobats.
Pour ces gens, vivant une vie modeste, jamais loin de la pauvreté, ces tensions économiques sont devenues d'autant plus prononcées depuis le début de la période du confinement. The initial objective is to sustain all 32 members of the FVA on the humble two-month-long budget of €2 per person per day, for a total of €3,840. So a donation of just €10 could help as many as 5 people!
L’objectif de ce projet serait de rassembler 3,840€, de sorte à pouvoir soutenir les 32 membres de Future Vision Acrobats avec le budget modeste de 2€/personne par jour, pour 60 jours. Donc un don de seulement 10€ pourrait aider jusqu’à 5 personnes !
