Yesterday was the first time I felt scared of leaving my house. The reason behind it was the fatal shooting that happened on Saturday at the bowling place near Dufferin and Lawrence which caused two people to die - One was targeted and the other was just an innocent bystander. The innocent bystander, Ruma Amar, was my co-worker at CIBC.
Just a day before the shooting, I met Ruma in the lunch room at work and she shared with me how happy she was to move to a new role within the company and how amazing the training was. She was excited as she was going to become a mother and was just a few months away to give birth to a baby. We were both getting late for our shifts and had to leave so we agreed to chat more about it later.. I never even could imagine that there would be no “later” or there would be no “next time”. Her family is shocked more than we are. Her husband and her sister never imagined that 3 of them would go for bowling and only two would return home alive. They just lost Ruma’s mom before 8 months due to breast cancer and now it’s Ruma and the baby.
