Early on May 23, Roddy entered Franklin Memorial ED with suspected appendicitis. On May 24 he underwent hemicolectomy surgery to remove two tumors and the surrounding lymph nodes. He spent the next 5 days in the hospital, separated from his family.
On June 2, their 8th wedding anniversary, Julia & Roddy learned it was cancer. It wouldn’t be much longer before they would receive the final diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer. In the days and weeks that followed, Roddy underwent numerous tests and procedures before beginning chemo. During this time the reality of how the treatment would impact the family became more clear. They made it a priority to be upfront with the kids. They didn't want to treat cancer as scary or a secret, because it would only cause fear and worry.
The community has come together to help. A Meal Train has been put in place, wood has been split and stacked, time has been given along with numerous cards and well wishes. When I talked with Julia about this fundraiser she wanted to make sure to note "we have been humbled by the community that has surrounded us. We will never be able to express the depths of our gratitude." There are too many people to thank already.
It takes a lot to ask for help. Through all the travel back and forth to Augusta & Farmington, with the worsening neuropathy and increasing "down days", with the massive changes to their family's lives, and the weight of out-of-pocket bills, they've resisted asking for financial help.
With all of this going on, they are looking forward, and they need our help.
Roddy's summer arborist business income that accounted for about 25% of the family's budget was cancelled. The cancer, with the added vulnerabilities introduced by the immunosuppressive effects of the chemo put the family at higher risk for COVID; which in-turn lead to taking both children full-remote. With the family living in the high risk category, and Julia caring for & teaching two remote students, and caring for Roddy on "down days" after treatments, she wasn't able to work as much and lost significant income as well. Then there are the medical bills. Assuming treatment stays on track and Roddy makes a full recovery on schedule their bills and lost income will top $30,000.
