Support Rita Roman through Chondrosarcoma Cancer
Those of you that know Rita, know that she is so generous with her time, hospitality, and gives so much love to everyone. She is always willing to help anyone and everyone in need and always someone you can lean on. She is not the typical person to ask for support. She was laid off from her job at the start of COVID-19 and has struggled with no stable income despite doing her best to find work. However, during this time, help and support are exactly what she needs.
In 2019, my mother, Rita, was diagnosed with Stage 2 Chondrosarcoma bone cancer in her upper thigh of her right leg. Chondrosarcoma is a very rare bone cancer that only about 600 people in the US are diagnosed with each year.
Shortly after discovering she had cancer, she underwent a surgery where they scraped out the cancer from her femur bone and added a bone graft to repair the damaged area. They also added a metal plate to give her the support she needed to recover. After a two year recovery, follow-up appointments every 2-3 months, and scans she found out that the cancer came back.
This time the cancer spread to the front and back of her femur bone, which could ultimately cause her bone to break and fracture. On July 6, 2021 Rita underwent a second surgery where she had a Total Femur Replacement, that included removal of part of her hip, replacing her femur bone and knee down to her shin bone now made of prosthetic metal bone. After a long 10 hours in surgery she is currently recovering in the hospital and later will be moved to a facility for intensive rehabilitation.
My mom has a long road to full recovery which will take over a year. I’ve come to be by her side during this time to help with her recovery both physically and emotionally.
In the days ahead my mom will need help with the medical needs, medical costs, living expenses, and everyday expenses through her long road to recovery.
