<div>On September 10, Ricky Smith — a lifelong servant leader in the North Omaha community and a member of the Omaha Public Schools Board of Education — boarded a flight to Los Angeles to represent OPS at a national school board conference.

<div>He hadn’t been feeling well, but Ricky being Ricky, he pushed through.
</div>
<div>Mid-flight, he lost consciousness. The plane made an emergency landing, and Ricky was rushed to the hospital. He’s been there ever since, fighting a life-threatening sepsis infection.

<div>This medical emergency has taken an enormous toll — physically, emotionally and financially - on Ricky and the Smith family. Ricky’s family has been by his side every step of the way, flying back and forth, covering hotel stays, navigating a mountain of medical decisions and bills. And now, the cost of care is piling up.
