Support Rachel Shore

Most of you know Rachel and Jason and their two wonderful boys, Isaiah and Asa. If you don’t, trust me, you would love them if you did.

The Background

Rachel has significant medical history involving her heart, including heart valve replacements when she was younger. For over a year now, her heart function was declining and this was linked to persistent, frequent PVCs (like skipped beats). She was referred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for further work up and treatment.

The Event

On January 11, 2018, Rachel was in the beginning phase of a procedure called an ablation when she went into sudden cardiac arrest. Resuscitation efforts began immediately and with excellent care. It is a true miracle that we have Rachel with us today and she suffered no harm at all to her neurological function. It was her heart function that took the biggest hit.

The Heart Transplant List

Rachel is now on the highest priority listing for a heart transplant. She will most likely remain in the Rochester Mayo Clinic ICU until a donated heart is matched and she can receive a transplant. The wait is estimated to be nine months to a year. After transplant, there will be a minimum of three more months remaining in Rochester for recovery and follow-up. This is a sobering thought. There is also a possiblity of transferring to a different location to have a shorter wait time, if her heart can get strong enough for that move. There is A LOT to still be determined.

The Practicals

Now comes the difficult part of trying to sort out all the details of their new normal. Currently they are making decisions about housing, moving the boys, finding a school for Isaiah, figuring out what to do with their house in Kansas City and the list goes on and on. As you can imagine, it is very overwhelming to think about these practical things after such a traumatic event, all while Rachel is still adjusting and focusing on her health in the ICU.

The Help

This is where we come in! Rachel and Jason are not alone. We can support them and carry this burden with them. We can help with the cost of housing, food, travel, moving, and all the many things that will arise while they wait for Rachel’s new heart. The funds we raise can be accessed by Jason and used immediately.
