<div>My name is Joanny, and I’m sharing this story on behalf of my cousin’s family. We have been faced with a heart-wrenching situation. My cousin Prisciliano Trejo Ricano, aka Yanito, aka Chris, has been hospitalized in the ICU (intensive care unit) in Georgia.

<div>Prisciliano is a confident, funny, and outgoing person. He dominated a room with jokes and was silly with everyone he met. As a cousin, he was always there to listen and be there for someone in their time of need. He was on the road doing various activities to stay physically active and work to meet his own goals. All this to say, Prisciliano is strong and kind, so this new turn of events has been shocking to his friends and family.

<div>Prisciliano was arrested in mid-June and a week after was taken to an ICE detention center in Georgia. His parents immigrated to the U.S with him when he was just 3 years old in hopes of a better life and work hard to achieve their own American dream. In the three-weeks he was at the ICE detention center, he became increasingly sick. He would call and video call his family daily for emotional support. He expressed high levels of stress, depression, and physical illness during his time there. He shared with his family multiple times that he was feeling unwell, coughing up blood, in pain, and with a bruise that would not heal. On July 16, his family received a call from his lawyer that Prisciliano had been transferred to a hospital in Georgia in an intensive care unit. The news devastated the family, and they all drove 4-5 hours to the hospital where he was located. Initially, the family was unable to visit due to Prisciliano being under ICE custody, but eventually the lawyers and ICE worked on an agreement, and he was able to be released from ICE’s custody. While that news is good, we now face the ongoing hardship of waiting for Prisciliano to medically recover. He was diagnosed with acute leukemia, which is a type of cancer in the bone marrow and blood. It’s difficult seeing someone who rarely got sick and was fairly healthy now be intubated, connected to IV meds, and restrained to a bed as he tries to fight for his life. His birthday was on July 10th and he turned 29 years old. This birthday has been the most difficult one to celebrate as he is going through the most difficult time of his life right now. Our only wish is for him to fully recover. This journey is going to be difficult for his family and more on Prisciliano when he wakes up. Once he is able to be transferred out of the ICU, the plan is hopefully to get him transferred to a hospital closer to home in North Carolina, where he will get further treatment for his diagnosis.

<div>As a family, we are trying hard to make sense of this situation and hope that everything goes by smoothly. We kindly ask, as readers, to donate what you can to his family. His parents struggle to make ends meet with their own medical problems, and finding work has been hard for them. His siblings are hardworking, but they're young and in school, so all the financial responsibility will be heavy on the family. We will now use these funds for his funeral costs and any other medical bills.

<div>Prisciliano es una persona segura de sí misma, divertida y extrovertida. Se robaba la atención de cualquier lugar con sus chistes y siempre hacía reír a todas las personas que conocía. Como primo, siempre estaba dispuesto a escuchar y acompañar a quien lo necesitara en momentos difíciles. Siempre estaba en movimiento, realizando diversas actividades para mantenerse físicamente activo y trabajar para alcanzar sus propias metas. Todo esto para decir que Prisciliano es una persona fuerte y bondadosa, por lo que este nuevo giro de los acontecimientos ha sido impactante para sus amigos y familiares.

<div>Prisciliano fue arrestado en Junio y, una semana después, fue a un centro de detención de ICE en Georgia. Sus padres emigraron con él a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía apenas 3 años, con la esperanza de una vida mejor y de trabajar arduamente para alcanzar su propio sueño americano. Durante las tres semanas que estuvo en el centro de detención de ICE, su estado de salud empeoró cada vez más. Llamaba y hacía videollamadas diariamente a su familia en busca de apoyo emocional. Les expresó que estaba sufriendo altos niveles de estrés, depresión y malestar físico durante ese tiempo. En múltiples ocasiones les comentó que se sentía muy mal, que estaba tosiendo sangre, que tenía mucho dolor y un moretón que no sanaba. El 16 de julio, su familia recibió una llamada de su abogado informándoles que Prisciliano había sido trasladado a un hospital en Georgia y se encontraba en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. La noticia devastó a la familia, y todos condujeron entre 4 y 5 horas para llegar al hospital donde estaba internado. Al principio, la familia no pudo visitarlo debido a que Prisciliano seguía bajo la custodia de ICE, pero finalmente los abogados y ICE llegaron a un acuerdo y lograron que fuera liberado de su custodia. Aunque esa es una buena noticia, ahora enfrentamos la difícil espera de su recuperación médica. Fue diagnosticado con leucemia aguda, un tipo de cáncer que afecta la médula ósea y la sangre. Es muy difícil ver que alguien que casi nunca se enfermaba y de buena salud ahora esté intubado, conectado a medicamentos intravenosos y sujeto a una cama mientras lucha por su vida. Su cumpleaños fue el 10 de julio y cumplió 29 años. Este ha sido el cumpleaños más difícil de celebrar, ya que está atravesando el momento más complicado de su vida. Nuestro único deseo es que logre recuperarse por completo. Este camino será difícil tanto para su familia como, aún más, para Prisciliano cuando despierte. Una vez que pueda ser trasladado fuera de la UCI, el plan es, con suerte, transferirlo a un hospital más cercano a su hogar en Carolina del Norte, donde podrá recibir el tratamiento adicional que necesita para su diagnóstico.
