Support Porter's Journey to Recovery

Hey everyone,

My childhood friend’s son, Porter, was in a horrific ATV accident. The cause of the crash is still unknown, but the impact has been devastating. Port suffered a skull fracture, several facial fractures, a broken arm, 2nd-degree burns on his left arm and shoulder, and countless bruises and scratches. Despite the severity of his injuries, Port has shown incredible strength and resilience.
Initially, doctors expected him to be sedated and intubated for 4-6 days, but Port defied those expectations and was only intubated for 48 hours! He’s progressing well, and we’re hopeful that his EVD (a device to monitor brain pressure) will be out in the next couple of days. He’s showing promising signs by responding well, urinating on his own, and even moving himself into a new position. While the road to recovery is long, we are encouraged by his progress.

This accident has brought a whirlwind of emotions and challenges. Port’s family has been by his side constantly, making the 1 hour and 40 minute trip to the hospital (Kristy has not left his side). His brother, Gray, was the first to hear the news, rushed downstairs to tell Kristy what had happened, and then rushed to the scene. Family and friends have been rotating to ensure someone is always with Porter.

Here’s a touching anecdote: Port, even in his current state, hasn’t lost his sense of humor. When a nurse wasn’t moving as fast as he wanted, Port quipped, “Stephen Hawking moves faster than you!” His spirit shines through even in these tough times.

We want to give a huge shoutout to the first responders, the medivac team, and the incredible medical team at SUNY for their quick and professional actions. Their efforts have made a significant impact on Port’s recovery. We also want to acknowledge the kind farmer who stayed with Porter until the first responders arrived. His presence and support during those critical moments made a significant difference.

Although money and medical bills haven't been our primary concern compared to the situation, they will become a reality eventually. The medical bills plus the costs of cognitive and physical rehabilitation will be overwhelming, and we want to ensure Port has everything he needs for a full recovery. Any amount you can give will make a significant difference and is deeply appreciated.
Thank you for your kindness, love, and support during this challenging time. It means the world to Porter and the Churchills. We are all hopeful and committed to seeing him return to the vibrant, playful kid he was before this accident.
