Help Save the Pacific Boychoir Academy

A match from an Angel Donor just announced!
An anonymous donor, who stumbled upon a PBA concert just 18 months ago, and was “immediately in awe” of the level of talent and professionalism before her eyes and in her own backyard, has agreed to donate the last $100,000 needed to reach this important goal!

Once we reach $170,000, she will make her contribution of $100,000 to ensure the success of our fundraising effort. So as of now, we only need to raise $100,000 to access this match opportunity. Incredible!!

Every donation made going forward means twice as much!  Please help with a donation and read and share its story below.

Sometimes referred to as the best kept secret in Oakland, Pacific Boychoir Academy is an outstanding small day school and choral music program best known for their Grammy-winning performances with the San Francisco Symphony and appearance on “America’s Got Talent.”

While PBA is having one of the best years in its 20 year history, it is suddenly facing a significant setback and is fighting for its survival. If it cannot raise funds to cover its operating budget through the end of its current fiscal year in July, it will be forced to radically reduce its day school offerings.

In 2018, PBA was thrilled to receive a donation of four works of Asian art valued by two independent New York appraisers at $2.8 million. As a tuition and donation-driven institution, this gift had the potential to provide the seeds of an endowment, lending long-term security and solvency to the organization.

When PBA’s Board of Directors took steps to sell the art, they were told that the paintings were duplicates and had little value. Having borrowed against the art for program development and operating costs, PBA now owes significant debt against a worthless asset, has had to layoff staff and is struggling to pay its faculty and staff and continue to operate its program.

Not a single faculty member has resigned in the face of pay cuts and the promise of additional hard work, a testimony to the love these teachers and administrators feel for PBA.

Donations of all sizes have the potential to sustain PBA’s operating budget for the next several months until the rewards of its outstanding admissions season become tangible in August.

If you value education on a small, personal scale, classical and contemporary music from all over the world, and the chance to make a tremendous difference in the lives of the students, teachers, and audiences who love Pacific Boychoir Academy, please consider contributing to this fund and sharing our GoFundMe with your network: https://www.gofundme.com/support-pba

About the Pacific Boychoir
Founded in 1998 by visionary music educator Kevin Fox, a small team of teachers, six boys, and no financial capital, the Pacific Boychoir has grown into a thriving choral music program for about 150 boys ages 4-18. A sister choir, Sorella, for girls ages 6-16 began in 2017 and already serves over 20 girls. In 2004, The Pacific Boychoir Academy, a day school where boys grades 4-8 receive 2.5 hours of music training every day, alongside rigorous, lively academic classes was born. Pacific Boychoir choristers perform alongside professional powerhouses and tour both the U.S. and the world each summer. Since 2004, PBA’s collaborations with the SF Symphony have yielded three Grammy awards, one of which – for Best Choral Performance – was a direct nod to the outstanding quality of the Pacific Boychoir.

PBA is a true underdog organization. Not only does its day school provide a small, intimate setting 100% committed to the academic and musical education of young boys, but it also instills the values of patience, focus, and discipline into its students. Alongside hands-on science classes, an integrated Humanities program, Singapore math, and Spanish, PBA’s students study Latin, coding, art, emotional intelligence, and a home ec-style curriculum lovingly referred to as “the manly arts” - and each year they produce a full-length Shakespeare play. They learn to be independent, caring for their belongings while traveling with the choir in the summers. In a world where young people are increasingly encouraged to seek easy answers, PBA is a counter-cultural force where the old-fashioned word “gentleman” is taken seriously and where faculty and alumni teach boys to value effort, beauty, and hard work.

PBA has never had an endowment or even medium-sized discretionary budget yet, it still found a way to award financial aid to 74% of its day school students in 2018-2019 and to give back to its community by providing free concerts.

2019 Highlights
●  The number of new applicants for the day school for the 2019-2020 school year has tripled since last year.
●  The 20th Anniversary Season opened with two collaborations with the SF Symphony
●  70% of 8th grade students earned Silver Awards in the National Latin Exam
●  PBA was honored with a Resolution from the City of Oakland for its 20 years of providing excellent education in Oakland
●  Students are preparing for a summer tour to Ireland and for collaborations with American Bach Soloists and Cantata Collective

Donations of all sizes have the potential to sustain PBA’s operating budget for the next several months until the rewards of its outstanding admissions season become tangible in August.
