If you’ve ever walked down Warren street, you probably know about West Indies Natural Food-- maybe you’ve even stepped inside. The shop is inviting and the smells are hard to resist. If you’ve ever gone in, then you know Paulette Clarke. She is unforgettable.
Paulette Clarke, owner and operator of the shop, has been in Hudson for 35 years. After moving from Jamaica in the 80’s, she made Hudson her home. To support her family, Paulette opened up West Indies Natural Food.
Paulette is known for her Jamaican comfort food--jerk chicken, curry goat, rice and peas. Back in the day, you often found her cooking outside in the open air, music about and lots of laughter.
Recently, however, rents in Hudson have skyrocketed and certain rules and restrictions have prevented Paulette from cooking outside as she used to. On top of that, the unforeseen circumstances caused by the COVID 19 pandemic further hurt Paulette's business.
This past winter, Paulette went to visit family in Montego Bay. She was unable to come back to Hudson after New York was deemed the epicenter of the virus. Subsequently, she missed out on months of revenue. When Paulette returned, various grants, loans, and funding resources for small businesses had come and gone.
This is an opportunity to support Paulette Clarke. The gentrification of Hudson has caused many black owned businesses to close down, fracturing a community that has been in Hudson for years.
