<div><strong>Tim Chappell, our pastor at the First Congregational Church of Clarkston (Michigan), has been diagnosed with kidney and lung cancer.</strong> Tim (and his wife Athena!) are working with doctors to restore his health. I don't know what stage the cancer is in medically, but it has been discovered that there is a tumor the size of a baseball on his kidney along with spots on his lung (pathology TBD)—it appears it may be spreading throughout his body. We are all praying for his return to good health.

<div>As many of you know, medical costs these days are very high. Even with great insurance, the out-of-pocket costs can be quite exorbitant. I know firsthand as I myself have had a run-in with lung cancer. I was fortunate to have "great" insurance, but the episode still cost me tens of thousands of dollars in the end. Unfortunately, Tim and Athena do not have really "great" insurance. Even before the pending surgeries and treatments, the medical bills are now accumulating for the doctors, diagnostics, CAT scans, etc.

<div>The life of a pastor is extremely rewarding from a personal and spiritual perspective; however, it is not a financial windfall. Despite Tim's full-time commitment to the church and the surrounding community, he will ultimately be unable to afford the onslaught of medical bills heading his way.

<div>I personally feel that the members of the church and the surrounding community of Clarkston can help this man get through a cancer diagnosis and treatment without severe financial hardship. Crowdfunding is a great way for people to make a big difference in one person's life.
