Support our Sensei!

Hi, my name is James, I’d like to introduce you to two of the most important people in my life.

My instructors, Dave O’Connor and Kari Erickson, are pillars of the Wenatchee community. Ever since opening the Wenatchee School of Karate nearly 30 years ago, they have brought excellent martial arts instruction to the valley. By creating a family-centric space, welcoming to all ages and abilities, these amazing people have improved the lives of countless individuals.

Now, they are battling Sensei O’Connor’s advanced cancer and the lingering effects of the pandemic on their business. They need your generous financial support.

In 1994, my sensei moved from Yakima to Wenatchee, Washington to begin their own karate studio, Wenatchee School of Karate. I was lucky enough to begin my karate training with them in 2000, as a first grader participating in an after school program at Sunnyslope Elementary. At the time, I was only interested in becoming a Power Ranger, but over the years my instructor’s careful tutelage made significantly positive changes in my life. I was an uncoordinated, sensitive, and easily-distracted kid. WSK and my sensei provided me, and many others like me, with a safe place – a second home - to grow and learn. It gave me a place to express myself honestly, to find confidence, and to experience healthy discipline. Because of WSK, I now have an amazing art that I can practice for the rest of my life and share with future generations. I can’t imagine my world without the influence of martial arts, and WSK is what made that world a reality.

Like other businesses, WSK had to pivot quickly to adapt to the incredible adversity of the pandemic. They did whatever they could to keep their business alive during this time.

Then, just as the pandemic was finally lifting, Sensei O’Connor was diagnosed with advanced cancer.

This is why I am now asking for your help.

This news could have brought the end of WSK, but unwilling to step away from their home, and the home they have created for others, they have chosen to keep fighting. When I spoke with them, I was moved by the resilience I heard in their voices. I was inspired by the hope that still rang through after all the hardships they had endured.

But they will not be able to continue without the support of the community they have brought value to for so many years. Please join me in helping two of Wenatchee’s best in their time of need. Your generous financial donation can help them through this crossroads moment in their lives.

Thank you for your generosity!
