ABOUT #1M PARTNERS IN PLASTIC
I'm volunteering with #1M Partners in Plastics, a plastic recycling center in Vipingo Village, Kenya. With plastic becoming a bigger threat to our environment, we are a local solution making a difference through community empowerment.
Vipingo and most of the surrounding villages on the Kenyan Coast are lacking a proper waste management program. As a result, the streets are littered with trash and plastic. To get rid of the plastics, villagers burn them, releasing emissions that are harmful to themselves and the environment. We are setting up a recycling center that will collect, sort, and shred plastic. Eventually, selling the shredded plastic will lead to a self-sustainable recycling center.
With community empowerment at our core, we will engage the community through programs including environmental education, cleanup events, partnerships with schools, art classes, and permaculture. Through our recycling center and programs, we aim to foster enthusiasm around the environment and promote eco-friendly and sustainable habits in Vipingo.
WHERE FUNDS WILL GO
In order to become operational, we need to register as a community based organization, apply for business permits, and finish the construction of the recycling center.
The cost breakdown is as follows:
- The necessary registration fees and permits cost $1,000, and without them, we will be shut down.
- Finishing the construction of the center will cost $7,500. This includes roofing, electricity, running water, toilets, training the staff, and getting the materials to satisfy health and safety requirements.
- Monthly running costs of the recycling center total $3,000, including rent, salaries, insurance, and other necessary costs.
The recycling center has a fast path to sustainability through selling the shredded plastics, however, without the startup funds, this project won't be able to get off the ground.
I will personally make sure the funds go directly to the above projects as #1M Partners in Plastic continues on our path to become operational.
