Hey what’s up everyone! Brandon Mesa here again and just want to say I am so grateful for all of the support from our community in building the Electric Ave DIY at Schutte Park. The skatepark has been absolutely amazing and crucial to our area’s skateboarders and has begun to foster a vibrant and diverse skate community. All ages and skill levels have begun to make use of the park and there is now a need for more features and improvements. I am asking for monetary assistance in order to achieve the following objectives:
1. Seal the concrete. We have a great finish on the concrete currently and if we want the smoothness to last we need to do a layer of sealer on top of it to help preserve it. Myself and some homies will do the labor but we need approximately 11-12 gallons of concrete sealer which will run about $400-$450, as well as some nice rollers to apply it! This will ensure we have a smooth skate surface for a longer duration, which in turn helps with falling and also just the general fun of riding at the park.
2. I have observed many beginner level skaters and brand new skaters breaking ground and trying to learn new stuff. I want to create smaller and more accessible pieces for these members of the community specifically. With this in mind I want to build a smaller quarter pipe about half the size of the current ones, and use a parking block for the coping on top. This will require cinder blocks/concrete/rebar. My estimate is it will run about $500-600 for materials of this feature when all is said and done. (See concept photo)
3. I have had a vision for a nice manual pad for some time and it was to be included in the original design but the budget did not allow for it. After brainstorming I came up with something that will create a nice and fun feature for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced skateboarder. With an ode to my dear late friend Shawn Shannon II in mind, I present a pear-shaped manual pad/slappy island. Perfect height for practicing manuals, this feature will provide a proper slappy curb with a slight curve that allows for fun from higher level skaters. This will include a kicker-cut that can be skated like a gap/ bump to ledge/ ledge to bump and ensures lower level skaters can access the pad without even being able to ollie. With this in mind there will be a small stem-like ledge protruding for beginners to practice ride on grinds. I think this feature will be something that makes the park very unique and draw skaters from other areas.
I know the older and higher level skaters in the community want a bank/ bank to ledge and more transition on the close side and I 100% agree. I would love to add this in the future but right now I want to foster the growth of the next generation of these younger skaters! Please help us with this vision and in the next round those larger obstacles will be the main focus. For now we need these small updates.
I graciously thank you in advance for your continued support of this community project.
with all my love,
Brandon Mesa
