<div>On January 4, 2026, our lives changed in an instant. My husband, who has dedicated over 20 years serving as a volunteer fire chief, woke up not feeling well. At first, we thought it was just the flu. But as the day went on, his symptoms became more concerning—he had trouble moving his left leg, his speech became slurred, and his blood pressure was dangerously high.
</div>
<div>Despite my concern, he insisted on pushing through to help with two fundraisers for our fire department before finally agreeing to rest. Later that evening, I discovered something alarming—his foot was severely infected. His toe and part of his foot had turned black. I rushed him to the ER, where doctors determined he was borderline septic and his kidneys were already being affected.
</div>
<div>What we initially thought was a diabetic ulcer turned out to be a burn he hadn’t felt due to neuropathy. That burn had developed into a serious infection. He was admitted to the SICU, and while we are incredibly grateful his kidneys recovered, he suffered a stroke caused by poor blood flow and clots related to the infection.
</div>
<div>On January 16, he underwent surgery to have his left great toe removed. He began physical therapy and was making encouraging progress.
</div>
<div>Then, on March 18, he suddenly became very ill again, experiencing constant vomiting. I noticed signs of infection in the next toe, and we knew we couldn’t wait. We returned to the ER in Birmingham, where doctors confirmed he now has a staph infection in his bloodstream. It is likely he will lose another toe, and this time his recovery will take at least six weeks to ensure proper healing.
</div>
<div>I had just started a new job in December, which means I don’t yet qualify for PTO or FMLA. I returned to work briefly in February, but I am now back on unpaid leave as we navigate the best care for Chris. I am his advocate and his voice, just as I know he would be for me.
</div>
<div>My husband has spent most of his life serving others as a first responder. He became a volunteer fire chief at just 20 years old and has always had a servant’s heart, ready to help anyone in need. In addition to everything, we also help care for his mother and my father, which can make monthly expenses overwhelming—especially now, with mounting medical costs that insurance won’t fully cover.
</div>
<div>If you feel led to help, it would mean more to us than words can express. Even sharing our story would be a blessing. We truly appreciate your prayers and support, and we pray that God blesses each and every one of you.
