<div>My dad, Oscar Bermudes—a dedicated husband, father of three, a truck driver, mechanic, and a resident of Kearny, NJ for nearly two decades—was detained by ICE on Sunday, June 4th, after the vehicle he was in took a wrong turn and ended up at a CBP checkpoint in upstate New York. He’s currently detained at Buffalo Detention Facility (Batavia).

<div>My parents, Oscar and Maria, are community organizers with Cosecha New Jersey. They moved to Kearny from El Salvador almost twenty years ago, and have since become deeply rooted in this town. My family was involved in mutual aid efforts to distribute food for immigrant families who were hit the hardest in 2020 and 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. My dad’s experience as a mechanic allowed him to offer community members free car repairs, check-ups, and rides whenever anyone’s car broke down. He would also help out whenever someone needed a ride or if their car broke down.

<div>My dad has always been great to us—my mom Maria, my brother Oscar Jr., and my little brother Angel who is the youngest. It is heart wrecking whenever Angel asks for our dad and asks why he’s not home. My dad, Oscar, always plays with Angel, and he recently taught him how to ride a bike — every afternoon my dad would usually take him out on a bike ride.

<div>We would all enjoy grabbing breakfast as a family on the weekends. Spending quality time as a family because he is a very family-oriented man. I am glad to say I have grown up to be a hard-working woman because of my dad. Regardless of what challenges he would face, his first thought is always his family’s well-being. It's unfair that my dad has been separated from our family just because of his immigration status. We can only talk to him through phone calls twice a day.

<div>We’re reaching out to our family, friends, and community for financial support to help us secure housing, pay utility bills, travel expenses to visit him, commissary, cover our basic needs, etc. My dad’s fight against the deportation machine has begun, and we know that this is going to be a long and difficult process. With your support and solidarity, we hope to bring our dad back home soon.

<div>Mis padres, Oscar y María, son organizadores comunitarios de Cosecha New Jersey. Se mudaron a Kearny desde El Salvador hace casi veinte años y desde entonces se han arraigado profundamente en este pueblo. Mi familia participó en los esfuerzos de ayuda mutua para distribuir alimentos a las familias inmigrantes que fueron las más afectadas en 2020 y 2021, en el punto más alto de la pandemia de COVID-19. La experiencia de mi papá como mecánico le permitió ofrecer a los miembros de la comunidad reparaciones, chequeos y viajes gratuitos cada vez que el automóvil de alguien se arruinara. Mi papá, Oscar, siempre juega con Ángel, y recientemente le enseñó a andar en bicicleta; todas las tardes, mi papá generalmente lo sacaba a pasear en bicicleta.

<div>Todos acostumbramos a distrutar de un desayuno en familia los fines de semana. A mi papá le gusta pasar tiempo de calidad en familia porque es una de sus prioridades. Me alegra decir que me he convertido en una mujer trabajadora gracias a mi papá. Independientemente de los desafíos que enfrente, su primer pensamiento siempre es el bienestar de su familia. Es injusto que mi papá haya sido separado de nuestra familia solo por su estatus migratorio. Ahora solo podemos hablar con él a través de llamadas telefónicas dos veces al día.
