Memorial for family Julius von Uhl

A True Equestrian Legend and Riding Master, Julius von Uhl, passed away last week and will be sorely missed by many.   Julius had a way, like no other,  with animals both wild and domesticated.   He was one of the last "old school masters" of classical dressage and his saying was always "I let the horse be the judge."  His methods of teaching ALWAYS put the horse first and he was constantly preaching "give".   If you were a student of his riding school and you felt like you or your horse did not learn anything, he would not take money for the lesson!  No one else in the horse industry has a "money back guarantee" like that!

Julius would make sure that his elephant, lions and horses never missed a meal, even if it meant his electricity would be shut off or his dinner would consist of peanut butter & jelly.  In other words, the animals came first. Sadly the USDA unlawfully took his elephant a few years back and this quite literally was the first nail in his coffin.  He was devastated loosing Twiggy and spent much time and money in an effort to get her back.

Julius was Hungarian/German and held a Baron title. He came to this country aided by the US Government for his efforts during the Hungarian Revolution.  He subsequently served for the United States in the Army as a K-9 dog trainer during the Vietnam war.  In his later years he was well cared for by the Veterans Administration and was always so appreciative of the care he received there, never taking it for granted.

Julius helped found the World Famous Arabian Nights Dinner Theater in Orlando and for many years was the trainer there until it closed.
With the Circus business dwindling due to poor and in most cases, unwarranted bad publicity and the horse business being such a "cliquish" industry, Julius and his family lived pretty much hand to mouth.  He did not have a 401 K, savings account, retirement fund or insurance.  Nor did he have funeral funding or plans.  We all thought he was going to live forever after all!

His daughter Vicki is currently a seeking a marketing degree at Purdue.  Unfortunately Linda, his wife of 30 years, is now left holding the farm with no means of income or help.   She has a lot on her plate trying to find homes for the many horses and ponies and to just try to keep financially afloat.

We are asking for donations to help this family.  Please consider sending money, in lieu of flowers .  Any monetary gifts would be greatly appreciated.  This is not a frivolous family, but rather some of the hardest working people I have ever known.  They do NOT like to ask for handouts.

Julius was working with a writer to publish a book on his riding technique.  He was just waiting for better weather to be able to get pictures added.  Even when or if it get's published, while it will be wonderful to have his methods saved for posterity, it likely will not bring in very much money.  He always had one idea or another forming in his mind about a business venture, but sadly, he didn't get the financial backing needed to make them reality.

We pray that there are enough people who learned a bit here and there from him that his riding system will live on.  We also pray that we can help support his family until they have some time to get back on solid ground.  On that note, I will end with how Julius ended each conversation I had with him..."God Bless You".
