For over 10 years, Nissa has lived with unexplained symptoms that have progressively gotten worse. She saw doctor after doctor, but was told over and over again that it was just anxiety. Her concerns were brushed aside, and she did her best to keep moving forward. This past year, the symptoms grew so severe that she had to step away from her job entirely to completely focus on her health.
On Friday May 2nd, Nissa had a migraine with visual disturbances that brought her to the ER. A CT scan showed an unusual spot on her brain. She was transferred to another hospital where an MRI confirmed a large mass on the right frontal lobe.
After several days in the hospital and more testing, Nissa underwent an unexpected craniotomy to remove as much of the tumor as possible. The surgeons had to stop before removing it all to protect her motor functions. Right now, they believe it’s likely a glioma, and we’re waiting on the official diagnosis. More treatment may be needed in the future.
As she recovers, Nissa and Nick are facing tough challenges ahead. One of the hardest is that her dominant left hand, which is the hand she uses to paint, has reduced dexterity. Painting is not just her work but a huge part of who she is. She won’t be able to return to work anytime soon. Her partner, Nick, is by her side full-time and has taken time off work to care for her.
This fundraiser is to help ease the load, to cover medical expenses not covered by insurance, lost income from both Nissa and Nick, post-surgery rehabilitation and therapy, and everything that comes with a long recovery. Any support, no matter the size, means the world and helps Nissa know she's not alone.
