local Utah organizations WanderLust + Existimos have signed a lease for 6 months in Midvale, UT. Both organizations focus on having safe spaces for QTBIPOC community. (Queer Trans Black Indigenous People of Colour.)
Just this past summer Existimos with the help of their community and GoFundMe brought to life a Pride event which focus was "By Us For Us." Other events they have put on include, a film festival, open mics, and art shows all focused on POC -- since the art scene in Utah can be very male and very white. They also support and sponsor other local community events who are in need of resources.
WanderLust is lead by two QTPOC who want to create a sex positive space that is inclusive and educational. Especially in a state like Utah where there is a lack of sex education-- they are doing important work. They held a Burlesque Affair which was a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood.
Together Wanderlust + Existimos is XOCHIKALLI.
As Xochikalli we want to bring an affordable community space for the QTBIPOC community to hold classes, workshops, art shows, private parties etc.
We also want to be able to offer free events-- free yoga, free healing nights, movie nights, women circles, book clubs, etc.
What we are asking from YOU is for help in paying our rent.
For six months rent will be 15,000. We added a bit more-- for renovations and extra supplies we will need to put on our events.
We want to give back to the community and have more free events-- The less we have to focus on rent-- the more we can focus on what we care about the most OUR community and saving this space.
Our new home once was the Hispanic Center for The Arts (dance studio) but due to gentrification and other trials-- this space was going to be lost to out of state developers. We decided to take over the payments and save the space and have it stay in POC hands.
