Support Nambale Magnet School: Tech

Donation protected
The Nambale Magnet School, a primary (K-8) boarding school in Western Kenya, is famous in the area for being a place where students can take the essential first strides in both acquiring a strong education and breaking out of a cycle of poverty that pervades Busia County and much of rural Kenya. Many of the school's students were displaced by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and attend the school on full scholarship. The school is not only sending its graduates off to the best high schools in the nation, but it also constantly looks for ways to equip its students with the life skills and perspectives necessary to succeed outside of school as well.

A large part of the Nambale Magnet School’s success derives from its effort to adapt primary school education to a modernizing world. As of now, the Magnet School possesses a Computer Lab, which functions as a classroom for vocational college students in addition to a wide range of students in the primary school. One of the school's most recent investments has been a full set of Kio Kits. A Kio Kit is a touch-screen device with a plethora of downloaded educational resources, ranging from Khan Academy to Wikipedia, that has the potential to reshape how classes are taught and to expose the students to worlds of new information that would otherwise not reach rural Western Kenya. Tule and I have had the privilege of growing up in a culture that values such exposure and encourages kids to pursue their individual passions through technology, and this is why we think that there may be no better cause to invest in for the students of the Nambale Magnet School. The money from this fundraiser is going towards acquiring another set of Kio Kits so that technology can become an integral part of many classes at a time, and so teachers do not have to scale back tech usage in their classes due to lack of devices.

With the Kenyan national curriculum rolling out progressive changes over the next five years, including a more holistic evaluation of students to determine high school admission, there is no better time for the Magnet School to invest in technology that provides thorough and broad exposure to extra-curricular subjects while also allowing them to dive deeper into their favorite classes.

Tule and I have been fortunate enough to have spent the past six weeks here, getting to see firsthand how driven the kids are and how much they value their access to education. Waking up at 5 AM and attending class until 8 pm, they have a work ethic unparalelled by any students I have ever seen. They are hungry for new information of all kinds, eagerly attending our after-school lessons and constantly peppering us with questions about America. The students are fascinated by technology, and through the little access they have, show already huge potential. More fluency in technology at this young age would put them on the right track for their high ambitions, preparing them for high school and college and especially life beyond school.

Over the next 40 days, we hope to raise $7,000 to go towards the purchasing of another set of Kio Kits. The money will benefit the Nambale Magnet School through Cornerstone Project, Inc (http://cornerstoneproject.org/ ).

We would like to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who has contributed to the school already, helping us blow past our first fundraiser’s target. The outpouring of support inspired us and school director Evalyn Wakhusama to begin another fundraiser so that we can make the most out of everyone’s immense generosity.

If you want to donate a large amount and want to avoid the 7.9% service fee charged by gofundme, feel free to send a check to Cornerstone Project, 100 Cove Road, Stonington, CT 06378, and just include in the memo "Timmy and Tule's support Nambale Fundraiser".

Lastly, please feel free to share this page generously with friends and family. Every contribution counts!
